Throughout the years, Miley Cyrus has worked really hard to not just distance herself from the character that made her a star, but also from the Disney Channel, the network that gave the starlet her first major break in the industry. However, the more Miley has come into herself as an artist and as a young woman, the more she has become outspoken about her time on Hannah Montana.Miley, who is known for her frank honesty, doesn’t shy away from talking about her past with Disney Channel. So much so, that when she hosted The Ellen Degeneres Show just a few days ago, she and guest Idina Menzel both related to working for the channel — and what she said is totally shocking.

Miley recently said that she felt like a servant for Disney Channel.
When Idina spoke about Frozen 2 rumors with Miley, she confessed, “Honestly I don’t know and I am a servant of Disney.”
Then, Miley raised her hand to the sky and said, “Honey, trust. That makes two of us. Welcome. No one knows that better than me, baby.”

Miley compared her time with the channel to being on Toddlers & Tiaras.
“From the time I was 11, it was, ‘You’re a pop star! That means you have to be blonde, and you have to have long hair, and you have to put on some glittery tight thing.’ Meanwhile, I’m this fragile little girl playing a 16-year-old in a wig and a ton of makeup. It was like Toddlers & Tiaras. I had f–king flippers,” Cyrus said.
Miley admitted that being on Disney Channel gave her body dysmorphia.
“I was told for so long what a girl is supposed to be from being on that show. I was made to look like someone that I wasn’t, which probably caused some body dysmorphia because I had been made pretty every day for so long, and then when I wasn’t on that show, it was like, ‘Who the f–k am I?’” she said.
She would burst into tears about arguments she would have with Disney Channel producers about “selling out.”
“I’m not Disney, where they have, like, an Asian girl, a black girl, and a white girl, to be politically correct, and, like, everyone has bright-colored T-shirts,” she said.
She admits that she’s thankful that she started off with Disney Channel, but it was “intense.”
“You know, I’m really thankful that I started on Disney. I got the most intense training. There’s times where I wish I could have just started as a new artist, but the world has kind of allowed me to do that,” she said.

She says that the idea of not being on the Disney Channel gave her a lot of anxiety.
“I feel really lucky — a lot of kid stars get all crazy or stuck in what they were, so they can’t actually become what they’re meant to be. When I went through a really intense breakup — you know, I was engaged — and when I was with him or when I was on Disney, the thing that gave me the most anxiety was not knowing what to do with myself when Disney wasn’t there to carry me anymore or if I didn’t have him,” the then-single pop star explained.
“And now I’m free of both of those things, and I’m fine. Like, I lay in bed at night by myself and I’m totally okay, and that’s so much stronger than the person three years ago, who would have thought they would have died if they didn’t have a boyfriend.”
She said she never felt the need to act like Hannah in her real life.
“I don’t think I’ve ever had to exorcise Hannah because I think people knew I was different from her in real life. Most people on Disney act as if they are really like their characters but I never felt the need to do that. I never pretended I was as good as what Disney writes,” she said.
Miley admitted that she felt like Disney Channel didn’t want her to grow up.
“They try to make someone not grow up but you can’t do that to real, normal people. If I’m doing something I’m going to do it right but then once I’m away from it I’ll do it my way,” she revealed.

Miley recalls how once she began working on her TV show, her teen dream kind of turned into a nightmare!
“I did not grow up spoiled in any way. I just wanted to be on TV. I mean, at one point — they’ll probably kill me for saying it — I was probably the least paid person on my cast because I didn’t know any better,” the actress recalled. “I was just like, ‘I can be on Disney! Yeah, I want to do it!'”

Miley implied that Disney Channel basically took advantage of her.
“My name was Miley on my show, but I didn’t own my name — we didn’t think about that. Like, ‘Yeah, you can use my name on your show, sure!’ My mom started understanding how many people take advantage of a child, so she hired smart people to protect me in that way. I’m happy that when I was younger, people protected me and put me in a position where I can now control my music,” she said.
