The basketball world lost the great Jerry West on Wednesday, who reportedly passed away peacefully at the age of 86.

Among those hurt by the news was fellow Hall of Famer Michael Jordan who shared a touching statement on West’s death through Stephen A. Smith on this morning’s “First Take.”

“I am so deeply saddened at the news of Jerry’s passing. He was truly a friend and a mentor. Like an older brother to me. I valued his friendship and knowledge. I always wished I could’ve played against him as a competitor but the more I came to know him I wish I had been his teammate,” Jordan said.

“I admired his basketball insights and he and I shared many similarities to how we approached the game. He will be forever missed,” MJ continued. “My condolences to his wife Karen and his sons. Rest in peace, Logo.”

The iconic NBA figure served not only as one of the game’s brightest stars when he played, but also as the league’s logo and an exceptional executive and dynasty-builder for the Lakers, Warriors, Grizzlies and Clippers.

His contributions to the sport will never be forgotten and it’s certainly a sad day for everyone who loves NBA basketball.
