Xavier Worthy silences weight critics: “I give the hits, not take them”

In football, a delicate balance of strength and speed is crucial, a fact not lost on Xavier Worthy. Faced with ongoing criticism about his weight, the rookie receiver for the Kansas City Chiefs decided to hit back, asserting his ability to manage his weight effectively.

Worthy impressed at the 2024 NFL Combine, clocking the all-time best time in the 40-yard dash at 4.21 seconds. His speed caught the attention of head coach Andy Reid, leading to his inclusion in the Chiefs’ roster.

However, weighing in at just 169 lbs, critics have raised concerns about Worthy’s ability to hold his own in the NFL. Some analysts worry that his slight frame could be a disadvantage against larger opponents.

To his critics, the Chiefs rookie pointed out that one of the league’s great receivers of the last decade, DeSean Jackson, also entered the NFL at 169 lbs and capitalized on his strengths.

Understanding strengths and weaknesses

Speaking to Sports Illustrated, the former Longhorn acknowledged his weight but emphasized that it does not deter him. He stressed the importance of understanding one’s strengths and weaknesses in the league. “Don’t, obviously, don’t try to go hit a 250-pound linebacker,”

“I don’t think I took big hits, I delivered them,” Worthy stated. “Just understanding your strengths and your weaknesses, I feel like that’s the big thing in the league.”

“Just understanding your strengths, like I said. (DeSean Jackson) came into the league at 169 and understood his strengths, so just using your strengths to your strength,” the receiver stressed.

The Chiefs’ revamped receiving corps

Following criticism of the receivers last year, the Chiefs took action to bolster their passing offense. With the goal of securing an unprecedented third championship, the franchise has focused on providing star quarterback Patrick Mahomes with top-tier weapons.

In addition to extending tight end Travis Kelce’s contract, the Chiefs signed receiver Marquise Brown during free agency. Worthy’s addition adds speed to the receiving corps, complementing returning players like Rashee Rice.

With the return of Justin Watson, Kadarius Toney, and Skyy Moore, Mahomes will have a mix of familiar faces and new talent to rely on. This depth will be crucial as the Chiefs aim for another Vince Lombardi Trophy.
