Competition among their wide receivers continues to be a focal point

As the Kansas City Chiefs‘ training camp draws to a close, the competition among their wide receivers continues to be a focal point.
With roster spots at a premium, several players are still vying for a place on the 53-man roster, and Kadarius Toney‘s situation is becoming increasingly uncertain.
Toney, who was brought in via trade during the 2022 season, is currently in a tight battle with receivers like Mecole Hardman, Skyy Moore, Nikko Remigio, and Justyn Ross.
While many of these players showcased their talents during the preseason opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Toney was notably absent, which has sparked concerns about his future with the team.
Toney‘s struggles stem from an ankle injury that has limited his participation in training camp, marking the second year in a row that he’s been hampered by injuries. Meanwhile, his competitors have been making strong cases for themselves.
Hardman‘s experience might make him a reliable choice, especially with Marquise “Hollywood” Brown dealing with his own injury. Moore, a second-round pick from 2022, has been getting significant reps, suggesting he’s in good standing.
Remigio has turned heads in camp and offers value on special teams, and Ross made a memorable play in the preseason opener, bringing a different skill set to the receiving corps.
Reid’s take on Toney
Toney‘s absence and injury issues have not gone unnoticed by head coach Andy Reid, who gave a lukewarm update on his status.
“Yeah, I mean, he was out here today working,” Reid said. “It’s just consistency. It’s just a matter [of that]. With the competition, I tell all of them that. There’s a ton of competition, and you’ve got to be on your game with that.”
Meanwhile, offensive coordinator Matt Nagy also expressed the need for Toney to prove he can stay healthy and make an impact.
“Kadarius, again, same thing,” Nagy said. “It’s just making sure he’s just got to get healthy and get out there so we can see him and see the reps.”
