Diana Taurasi was left off the starting five of Team USA’s quarterfinal match against Nigeria at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Wednesday but that did not stop her from making basketball history.

Taurasi came off the bench versus Nigeria and scored three points on 1-for-3 shooting from the field while also dishing out four dimes in over 14 minutes of action. With those assists, Taurasi became the first player in Olympic history to have scored more than 300 points and produced over 100 assists at the Summer Games.

“With her four assists in tonight’s game, Diana Taurasi is the fifth player to have dished out 100+ assists at the Olympics; she is the only player to have made 300+ points and 100+ assists in the competition.”

Taurasi’s starting spot was given to Jackie Young in the Nigeria game. The strategy worked in favor of Team USA, as Young garnered 15 points on the strength of a 6-for-6 shooting on her 2-point attempts in an 88-74 victory for the gold medal favorites.

A’ja Wilson led the Americans with 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Brittney Griner provided 11 points and three boards.

Team USA’s opponent in the semifinals will be Australia, which beat Serbia in the other quarterfinal contest to the tune of an 85-67 score.
