There’s a name floating around who may be the next manager of the Chicago White Sox.
The Chicago White Sox are in utter turmoil this season, with one of the worst records in baseball. While the team hasn’t cut ties with their manager Pedro Grifol, there are some names out there rumored to be replacing him. One such person is Miami Marlins manager Skip Schumaker, per USA Today.
Schumaker is the reigning National League Manager of the Year. He has been with the Marlins for the last two seasons, taking the team’s duties in 2023. Schumaker is a long-time veteran of Major League Baseball, despite his young age. He played for the St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds and Los Angeles Dodgers from 2005-2015. He won a World Series playing for the Cardinals in 2011.
An interesting tie between the White Sox and Schumaker is that the manager played for Tony La Russa in St. Louis, for seven seasons. La Russa is now a senior adviser to the White Sox, after a stint managing the team in recent years. His health caused La Russa to step down from managerial duties in 2022. The former manager still has a say in decision making for the team though, per USA Today.

The franchise is mired in one of the worst stints in its history. Chicago is on pace to have the worst run differential in years. The team is just simply struggling to score runs. The team from Chicago’s South Side has a 21-57 record, heading into a game Sunday against the Detroit Tigers.
Chicago has the worst road record in baseball, with just eight victories this season away from home. The team’s manager Pedro Grifol has been at the center of an avalanche of criticism regarding the poor play. Former White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen openly criticized Grifol, and fans don’t seem to think much of him either. Despite the team’s failures, it seems that Grifol is going to be able to keep his job for at least the rest of the season.
It’s uncertain what will happen after that. It would certainly seem likely that Chicago won’t bring the embattled manager back for the 2025 season. Chicago is on pace to lose well over 100 games this year, which could very well be worse than what they did in 2023. Last season, the team finished with 101 losses. There were expectations this season that things would be better. They haven’t been.
The White Sox have struggled with injuries. That has certainly contributed to the struggles on offense. The team has been without Tommy Pham and Eloy Jimenez for parts of the season. Those two players were expected to help score runs, and it hasn’t panned out very well.
Luis Robert Jr. is also struggling at the plate. He’s been the subject of trade rumors, although he has publicly stated he would like to stay in Chicago. Still, it seems the walls are about to completely close in on this struggling franchise. Just about every big name player with the team has been rumored to be part of some type of trade. White Sox fans are thirsting for success, and it looks like they will have to wait a good while longer for it.
