A couple of years ago, people were high on Quentin Grimes during his time with the New York Knicks. While he has fallen off from everyone’s radar, the Milwaukee Bucks can swoop in during the offseason and potentially give him a better situation next season.

Grimes’ NBA journey has been a roller coaster ride over the past year. After a breakout sophomore season with the New York Knicks, the young shooting guard entered this year with high expectations as a key part of the team’s starting lineup.

However, Grimes struggled to build on his previous success, seeing his shooting percentages and scoring average dip significantly. He often looked tentative and hesitant on the offensive end, passing up open shots and struggling to make an impact.

Despite his defensive contributions, Grimes eventually lost his starting spot to former Bucks wing Donte DiVincenzo, and was then included in a trade deadline deal that sent him to the Detroit Pistons. In his brief stint with the Pistons, Grimes has continued to flounder, shooting under 22% from the field and just 14.3% from three-point range.

This recent downturn has raised questions about Grimes’ long-term fit and development. As he enters the offseason, the young guard will need to find a way to recapture the form that made him a promising prospect, whether that’s in Detroit or elsewhere in the league.

Why Detroit Pistons’ Quentin Grimes Is a Low-Key Trade Target for Milwaukee Bucks

As it stands, the Pistons’ rotation is a mess and the franchise may shop some of their guys, including Grimes. In an article for Behind The Buck Pass, Dalton Sell explained why the former New York Knicks wing might make a good move for the Giannis Antetokounmpo-led team.

“The 24-year-old did not get consistent minutes in the 2023-24 campaign which impacted his play. Grimes shot just 39.5 percent from the field and his counting stats were down across the board before getting traded to Detroit in February for Bojan Bogdanovic and Alec Burks. He played just six games with the Pistons before missing the remainder of the season with an injury, but there are serious questions about his future.

Quentin Grimes struggles on defense but can make significant offensive contributions. He could be an upgrade over Malik Beasley for the Bucks and his trade value should be at an all-time low. Grimes is a restricted free agent in 2025, but Milwaukee cannot afford to wait. They should try to buy low on the talented guard and hope he bounces back in the Cream City,” Sell wrote.

Over the course of his career, Grimes averaged 8.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists. He also shot 42 percent from the field, 37 percent from deep, and 77 percent from the free throw line.

Although it’s not yet known whether Grimes will be made available by the Pistons or not, the Bucks’ front office stand to gain if they make a move for him in the offseason. Given the chance, the young wing can continue where he left off before the New York Knicks traded him.
