Former Detroit Lions offensive lineman Gosder Cherilus has broken his silence following the news of his arrest for urinating on a woman during a flight.
According to Sabrina Lam and John R. Ellement of The Boston Globe, Gosder Cherilus was arrested following a strange and disturbing incident on a Delta Airlines flight from Boston, Massachusetts to Dublin, Ireland.
The report states that an intoxicated Cherilus urinated on an elderly female passenger during the flight. After employees and witnesses tried to stop him, Cherilus allegedly “slapped” an elderly male passenger and took his seat.
Lam and Ellement reported that Cherilus appeared in court on Monday and faces charges of disturbing a flight crew, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct.
Taking to X/Twitter, Gosder Cherilus said in a statement that he took sleeping medication for the flight since it was delayed by roughly four hours. Cherilus said the medication led to “behavior that is not representative of my character” before apologizing to the other passengers and flight crew.
Cherilus has pled not guilty to the charges, per the report from Lam and Ellement.
A star offensive tackle of Boston College, Gosder Cherilus was drafted 17th overall by the Lions in 2008. He was taken 14 spots after BC teammate Matt Ryan, who went third overall to the Atlanta Falcons.
The 40-year-old Cherilus was a Second-team All-ACC in 2007. That year, the Eagles finished 11-3 and defeated Michigan State 24-21 in the Champs Sports Bowl (now called the Pop-Tarts Bowl).
Gosder Cherilus Played For Three Teams In Nine-Year Career
Cherilus spent his first five seasons with the Lions (2008 to 2012) and helped them to a rare postseason appearance in 2011. He went on to sign with the Indianapolis Colts in 2013 free agency, though the AFC South club released him after two years.
Cherilus then signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2015, where he spent his final two NFL seasons. He appeared in 132 games over his nine-year career.
