U.S. tennis sensation Coco Gauff was distraught after losing to Donna Vekic in her first Olympics, and was in tears when slamming the lack of French technology.
Coco Gauff was furious with the umpire and not for the first time in Fance
U.S. Open champion Coco Gauff was in tears after a controversial umpire call put her on the brink of Olympics elimination, and it’s not the first time she’s argued with officials in France. Gauff lost to Donna Vekic on Tuesday to end her Olympic singles dream but felt cheated by the lack of technology.
Clay courts haven’t been kind to Gauff in her short tennis career, and she’s suffered heartbreak in France on several occasions.
Gauff was hoping for success in her first Olympics but started arguing with the umpire after he disagreed with a call made by a line judge. Gauff was trailing when serving in the second set and Vekic was on break point when her return was called out.
The U.S. player initially felt relieved as the score returned to deuce, but Gauff also didn’t keep the ball in play. The chair umpire Jaume Campistol then overruled and awarded Vekic the point after believing it landed in, handing her a 4-2 lead and a break of serve.
Gauff was stunned, and instantly spoke to the umpire for a number of minutes. “I never argue these calls. But he (line judge) called it out before I hit the ball,” Gauff said. “It’s not even a perception; it’s the rules. I always have to advocate for myself.”
Her argument wasn’t that Vekic’s shot was out, but instead that her return was not authentic due to the call being made before the shot was played, and the crowd agreed. Gauff quickly lost following the incident, as Vekic won 7-6, 6-2.
Earlier this year Gauff faced a similar issue when losing to World No. 1 Iga Swiatek at the French Open. The U.S. star slammed the competition and called it “ridiculous” that the French Open did not have the correct technology, and the crowd agreed.
Gauff then brought up the Swiatek incident on Tuesday, reminding Campistol and even a supervizor she had requested that she’s been a victim to the lack of technology several times. “It always happens here at the French Open to me. Every time,” Gauff said.
“This is like the fourth, five times it’s happened this year.” The crowd booed but Gauff then won a point against Vekic’s serve in the next game and was met with a huge ovation from the fans, as they made it clear whose side they were on.
However, it didn’t change the outcome and Gauff didn’t win another game, ultimately losing in straight sets. Gauff showed her class after the match, refusing to blame the incident for the entire result. “I’m not going to sit here and say one point affected the result today, I was already on the losing side of things.”
