Robert Griffin III has reportedly been fired by ESPN with two years remaining on his deal. The former NFL quarterback joined ESPN in 2021 and was a part of the network’s college game broadcast teams. Griffin was also a part of ESPN’s Monday Night Countdown but was recently replaced by Jason Kelce.

As per the Atheltic’s Andrew Marchand, Griffin was fired as part of cost-cutting measures. He was informed of ESPN’s decision earlier this morning.

Sam Ponder, host of ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown since 2017, was also let go by the network.

Last year Steve Young, Suzy Kolber, and Todd McShay were among those fired by the company.

Why did ESPN fire Robert Griffin III?

As per Marchand, ESPN is entering the end of its fiscal year, and the network usually makes such hard decisions during this time. Moreover, he mentioned that Griffin’s stock had fallen, and his role had diminished.

Two years ago, Griffin faced criticism for using a derogatory term during the coverage of a game between the Arizona Cardinals and the New England Patriots.

It is unknown whether that incident contributed to ESPN’s decision, but the Heisman-winning quarterback has never shied away from giving his opinions on various matters on X.

Robert Griffin III recently discussed the Atlanta Falcons acquiring Matthew Judon from the New England Patriots. He received support from his fans, who are looking forward to his next venture.

Robert Griffin III could return to broadcasting but the timeline depends on his contract with ESPN.

If Griffin is allowed to work for other networks, then Fox Sports might pursue him. The network parted ways with Skip Bayless and Griffin could bring a huge audience with him.

He will be a sought-after commodity, and based on his activity on social media, he is tapping into other sports as well. It makes him a strong contender to take over from Bayless and be the face of the network alongside Nick Wright.
