American actress Scarlett Johansson is known worldwide for a host of reasons. As the world’s highest-paid actress in 2018 and 2019, Johansson’s films have grossed over $14.3 billion worldwide, making Johansson the ninth-highest-grossing box office star of all time.

She has also received many awards for her films, including a Tony Award, a British Academy Film Award, nominations for two Academy Awards, and five Golden Globe Awards. Given this long list of accomplishments, it’s no wonder she’s become a household name.

But there’s one thing you may not know about the acclaimed actress—she was once married to Ryan Reynolds. If this is the first time you’ve heard about this power couple, you’re not alone. Johannson and Reynolds were and still are tight-lipped about their time together.

If Reynolds weren’t as famous as he is, fans and the media might not be as interested in the couple. But the actor is arguably just as well-known as Johansson. As the star of the hit films Deadpool and Deadpool 2, it would be difficult to find someone who hasn’t heard his name.

Because both of them are giant Hollywood stars, many people have wondered over the years what led to their relationship. The intrigue only grew when the couple refused to talk about their relationship with the public, which only caused more rumors and speculation.

When the couple got engaged in 2008, they issued a statement announcing the engagement. After that, both Johannson and Reynolds refused to say much, if anything, about their relationship.

What We Do Know 

Even today, ten years after the pair decided to end their union, they’ve only mentioned it publicly a few times. It seems that the only thing they want the public to know is their shared desire for privacy.

Over the course of their marriage, the pair rarely ever mentioned their relationship publicly. When they did speak of it, they only mentioned it in passing, even going so far as to not say the name of their partner in interviews.

In September of 2009, Johannson spoke briefly about her relationship in an interview with Glamour. She said that she was just as surprised as everyone else that she got married to Reynolds so quickly. Though she did answer the question posed about her marriage, she kept her response vague and never mentioned Reynolds by name.

“It just happened,” she said. Johannson also said that she wanted her relationship to make her better and help her learn new things about herself. She also said that she wanted their marriage to help her “explore things within [herself] that [she] hadn’t thought about in the past.”

Shortly after their marriage, Johannson spoke to David Letterman about what it was like to plan her wedding in secret, away from the press. “I never thought that I’d be planning my wedding in a dark alley somewhere,” she said. “But it turned out that way. It was really quite secretive and I felt like I was doing a drug deal without all the fun…I got married in a very remote part of Canada. There were bears and whales and eagles.”

The Relationship Turns Cold

Both Johansson and Reynolds scored roles in hit superhero movies that same year. Johansson was cast in Iron Man 2 in March 2009. Four months later, Reynolds was cast as DC’s Green Lantern.

By the end of that year, the relationship began to lose its luster. In December of 2009, Johansson told Time Out New York that she and Reynolds had not been spending much time together or going on dates due to their busy schedules.

“We have no time for dates. We work and then go home and I, anyway, just stare at the wall for a few hours before I go to sleep,” she shared. “Like in any profession, it’s difficult. You want to make sure you have time to invest in your family. It’s a challenge, but it’s worth it.”

Shortly after, many began to speculate about the state of their relationship. The couple had begun living separately due to their work. At the time, Johansson was performing nightly on Broadway, and Reynolds was shooting Green Lantern in New Orleans.

Throughout that year, rumors kept swirling. In December of 2010, the couple announced that they were filing for divorce. The statement was vague, and fans never knew exactly what caused the split. That is, until Johannson opened up about it in a 2015 interview. She said that Reynolds was jealous of her successful career.

“It takes a man who’s not only confident in the love that you have for one another, but confident in what he has going on in his own career,” she said. “He has to be in a field that’s completely different from yours.”

Both Johannson and Reynolds have since moved on, and both are currently happily married.
