The Dallas Cowboys are meeting with a veteran and notable wide receiver, one week after he hit the open market.

According to Patrik Walker of the team website, wide receiver Zay Jones is visiting with the Dallas Cowboys today. The Jacksonville Jaguars released Jones on Apr. 30 in a move that cleared just over $4 million in cap space.

In the 2022 offseason, Jones signed a three-year deal with Jacksonville worth $24 million. That was widely viewed as a giant overpayment at the time, but Jones proved the critics wrong by posting a career year: 82 receptions for 823 yards and five touchdowns.

Jones’ efforts helped the Jaguars to a surprise AFC South division crown. They went on to defeat the Los Angeles Chargers in the Wild Card Round before losing to the eventual Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs in the Divisional Round.

For his career, Jones has 287 receptions for 3,028 yards and 18 touchdowns. He previously played for the Buffalo Bills and Las Vegas Raiders.

Dallas has been surprisingly quiet in the free agent and trade markets this year. Owner Jerry Jones has faced criticism for his lack of activity, since he vowed back in January that the team would have an “all-in” offseason approach.

Zay Jones Would Be A Savvy Pickup By The Dallas Cowboys

Though the Dallas Cowboys churn out a top-10 offense every year, they’ve been too reliant on superstar wideout CeeDee Lamb in the passing game. Brandin Cooks was a steady No. 2 WR for Dak Prescott last year, but the Cowboys could use more receiving depth.

Jones put up over 800 yards on a 2022 Jacksonville team that also had Christian Kirk, Evan Engram and Travis Etienne Jr. on offense. He is more than capable of putting up similar numbers on a pass-heavy Dallas offense, especially with opposing defenses mostly focusing on Lamb and Cooks.
