Although South Sudan’s recent effort fell far from its exhibition showcase vs. Team USA, at least it avoided a three-ball fury from Stephen Curry. Team USA beat South Sudan 103-86, with the bench scoring 63 points. Overall, Team USA did a great job, except for Curry. The Golden State Warriors superstar scored three points.

Curry’s shooting took a considerable dip. Only hitting one field goal, Curry went a miserable 0-6 from the three-point line. Although individual stats matter in the NBA, the prideful competition of the Olympics outweighs the influence of one.

Team USA head coach Steve Kerr acknowledged the “soap opera” world of the NBA but took a serious assessment of his team in Olympic play.

“The NBA is so popular worldwide, and the regular season is kind of a soap opera. And so we understand that, and social media takes over and everything becomes so dramatic,” Kerr said. “And I think we need to give these guys more credit. They’re here to win a gold medal.”

Although Curry struggled, the team won, and ultimately, that’s all that matters in the Olympics. Kerr reiterated that the extra noise means nothing as long as your team wins.

“The beauty of the Olympics is none of that crap matters. And I know everyone’s going to write about it, but none of that crap matters. We’re just trying to win every game and win a gold medal, and it’s an incredibly pure feeling — and the guys are committed to each other, and they’re not going to worry about any of that,” Kerr said.

Team USA plays Puerto Rico on August 3 at 8:15 AM Pacific time.
