American superstar Coco Gauff certainly didn’t see her 2024 Summer Olympics bid ending this way.
Early on Tuesday morning, Gauff fell to Donna Vekic in the third round of the singles tournament, and it was largely in part to a controversial call made by an official that swung the momentum of the match and left Gauff in tears.
During the match, the umpire called a ball out before Gauff could return it, making the call in her backswing. That caused the American to miss her shot. However, Gauff believed that the ball was in and that the missed call interfered with her attempt.
After arguing the call for quite a while, Gauff ultimately walked away with frustrated tears in her eyes after proclaiming to herself that “this always happens to me on this court.”

While there’s nothing that Gauff can do about this one call in particular or her current standings in the 2024 Summer Games, she is attempting to lobby for change in the future by bringing in a better replay system for the sport of tennis.
“I feel like in tennis, we should have a VAR system because these points are big deals,” Gauff said, per NBC’s Nicole Auerbach. “Usually, afterward they apologize. It’s kind of frustrating when the sorry doesn’t help you once the match is over.”
Having someone with Gauff’s standing — she was the Team USA flag-bearer alongside LeBron James — eliminated early on in the Olympics due to a controversial call may be a big enough deal to demand some change going forward.
We will see if the IOC listens going forward.
