Wes, 41, was on the show to talk about Labour’s plans to ease the pressure on the NHS.

But Charlotte and Richard were keen to get Wes’ opinion on Diane Abbott being banned from standing for Labour at the General Election.

As Wes attempted to turn the conversation back to the NHS, the presenters continued to press him on Diane, 70.

Rushing to social media to comment on the interview, one viewer wrote: “This is painful.”

Another said: “Car crash interview.” And a third added: “He has a point, NHS waiting lists ARE more important. #gmb just wants to score points here, as per usual.”

As Charlotte pressed Wes on Diane Abbott, he replied: “I actually think that what happens to seven and a half million people on NHS waiting lists is a far greater concern than the fate of any individual candidate.”

Wes insisted that it was a “fruitless line of questioning” and remarked that they’d no doubt run out of time before he was able to talk about the NHS.

Yesterday Diane onfirmed she was handed back the whip following a year-plus suspension but will not be allowed to contest her Hackney North seat for the party in July.

It means Parliament’s first black female MP now faces a choice between stepping away from frontline politics or fighting her seat as an independent, like former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

Diane confirmed the decision in a statement to the BBC, saying: “Although the whip has been restored, I am banned from standing as a Labour candidate.”
