Novak Djokovic made a classy gesture a day after winning the gold medal at the Paris Olympics as the Serb took a moment to send a special message to Carlos Alcaraz and acknowledge his early success but also encourage him to keep his head high because he is just 21 and more great things are coming for him.

On Sunday, Djokovic beat Alcaraz in two sets to earn his maiden gold medal at the age of 37. But it was all but an easy battle as the 37-year-old Serb needed nearly three hours to complete a 7-6 (3) 7-6 (2) win over the recent French Open and Wimbledon champion.

After ending on the losing side in the final, Alcaraz had a hard time dealing with the loss and he started crying. But the following day, record 24-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic had something for the 21-year-old Spaniard.

Djokovic’s message to Alcaraz and the Spaniard’s response

“A quick shoutout to @carlitosalcarazz. Another epic final, my friend. El clasico. Congratulations to you and your team for an excellent Olympics. Considering your age, your energy, and the way you play, you probably have 20 more Olympics ahead of you (laughing emoji). Your gold will come. Until next time, amigo,” Djokovic wrote on Instagram.

Alcaraz certainly appreciated the message since he responded: “Thank you titan! Can’t wait to the next one.”

Meanwhile, Spanish tennis superstar Alcaraz admitted that he felt like he let down his people after failing to win the gold medal.

“I think I put more pressure on myself because I was playing for Spain, for the Spaniards. I felt that I let the Spanish people down by not winning the gold,” Alcaraz said after the final.

Since Djokovic and Alcaraz are both out of the Montreal Masters, their next meeting this summer could potentially come at the Cincinnati Masters or the US Open.

When they meet next time, Djokovic will enter the match with a 5-3 head-to-head record versus Alcaraz.
