Concerns have been raised about Liam Neeson after the actor was photographed looking gaunt on the streets of New York on Saturday.

The 63-year-old ‘Taken’ star looked a shadow of his former swarthy self while walking through SoHo, with his clothes virtually hanging off him.

A spokesperson for the star has reassured his worried fans telling MailOnline: “He has never been healthier”.

Gossip site Radar added fuel to the speculation by claiming the usually beefy actor has “cleared his schedule” but his spokesperson says “he has just completed work on one film and starts another in September.”

Whether the dramatic weight loss is for an upcoming film role, or the ‘Schindler’s List’ star has simply taken up a new fitness regime is not yet clear, but his IMDB page states that he currently has two films in post-production – Martin Scorsese’s ‘Silence’ and JA Bayona’s ‘A Monster Calls’.

His forthcoming action thriller ‘A Willing Patriot’, due to shoot in South Africa later this year, doesn’t sound like the sort of role that requires a drastic physical transformation, so what could be behind this change in appearance?

Photos of Liam over the last few months have shown the star looking recognisably thinner, but that’s not unheard of in the Hollywood with actors like Christian Bale, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Matthew McConaughey all recently undergoing dramatic weight loss for movie roles.

This photo of Neeson (above) taken at the Garden of Dreams Talent Show in New York on 18 June, shows the star looking noticeably thinner, but whether this sort of weight loss is advisable for man of his age is yet to be seen.

Earlier this year, Neeson said he was getting too old for the sort of action roles that have dominated his recent acting career, saying he plans to pack it in very soon.

“Maybe two more years. If God spares me and I’m healthy,” he said in a US interview. “But after that, I’ll stop [the action] I think.”
