Neeson hails from Northern Ireland and appeared in various theater productions in Ireland before he landed roles in movies like Excalibur or The Bounty with Anthony Hopkins and Mel Gibson. Neeson started to come into his own as a leading man in the ’90s, and following his starring role in Darkman, he received acclaim for his work in Schindler’s List, which earned him an Oscar nomination.

Notable roles in the years that followed include Rob Roy, The Phantom Menace and Love Actually. Neeson had somewhat settled into a niche as a wise mentor figure in projects like Kingdom Of Heaven or Batman Begins before a latter-day career reinvention as an action star. This was due to the surprise success of Taken, which led to two sequels – though a Liam Neeson Taken 4 is unlikely – and playing similiar roles in Non-Stop and Run All Night. He’s mixed it up in other genres during this time too, including survival thriller The Grey or romantic drama Ordinary Love.

3. The Haunting (1999)

Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House has been adapted three times, including the classic The Haunting from 1963 or Netflix’s acclaimed Hill House TV series. 1999’s The Haunting is the odd one out on that list, with the film being a thudding, CGI-heavy bore. The story sees Nesson’s scientist inviting a group – played by the likes of Catherine Zeta-Jones and Owen Wilson (who says “wow” an awful lot) – to a creepy house to take part in a study on insomnia, although it’s really to examine their response to fear. Director Jan de Bont heads in the opposite direction of the ’63 film, hitting viewers over the head with jump scares, loud music and CG. The production design is beautiful, but The Haunting is too hollow to engage with.

2. High Spirits (1987)

A misfiring horror-comedy from Neil Jordan, who has all but disowned High Spirits after it was taken away and recut. High Spirits is set in Ireland, where Peter O’Toole’s character tries to swindle American guests by tricking them into staying at his castle by pretending it’s haunted; the issue is, the ghosts that really reside there aren’t happy about this. Despite a cast that includes Neeson, Daryl Hannah and Police Academy star Steve Guttenberg, High Spirits isn’t particularly funny, creepy or romantic, and it was quickly forgotten following its release.

1. After.Life

The final Liam Neeson Horror Movie cast the actor as a mortician giving comfort to Christina Ricci’s character, who has seemingly died in a car accident. Neeson’s character claims he can speak with the dead and helps them transition to the afterlife, but the question is whether Ricci’s Anna is really dead. After.Life has a very intriguing premise, a chilly atmosphere and a sinister, low-key turn from Neeson. That said, the film also suffers from a plodding pace, and feels like a concept better suited to an episode of a horror anthology than a standalone feature.
