Former wrestler Dwayne Johnson, known by his stage name “The Rock,” said: “I’m at a point in my career where I want to make more important, human movies.”

Dwayne Johnson earned the nickname “The Rock” as a star of the television sports entertainment company World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) before starting his acting career.

The film will be written and directed by Benny Safdie, who previously co-wrote and co-directed Uncut Gems, one of Independent Film’s biggest commercial successes to date.

Speaking to Variety about his upcoming collaboration with director Safdie, Johnson said: “Benny wants to be creative and continue to push the envelope when it comes to raw and honest stories. I’m at a point in my career where I want to push myself in ways I haven’t before. I’m at a point in my career where I want to make important films that explore humanity and explore pain and struggle.”

However, the star of “Black Adam” added that he will not permanently give up blockbuster works.

“I want to make it clear that this is not an abandonment of blockbuster films that appeal to all ages, men and women. I love doing this type of film, it has great value and importance, but there must be a time and place dedicated to this genre,” Johnson said.

“I’m at this point in my career and I want more, I don’t mean want more box office, I mean want to do more human movies. And that is why Benny Safdie is the perfect partner I look forward to working with.”

The Smashing Machine has been rated by A24 as Johnson’s “Most impressive project and role ever”.

Johnson will play Mark Kerr, a former wrestler who competed as a mixed martial artist from 1997 to 2009. During his MMA career, he was a two-time UFC Heavyweight Tournament Champion who winner of the World Vale Tudo Championship and rival Pride FC. Previously, he was the subject of a 2003 HBO documentary, also titled The Smashing Machine after Kerr’s longtime nickname.

The new film is said to be set around the turn of the millennium and will be about Mark Kerr’s struggles with love and addiction as well as his exploits in the ring.
