According to a former NBA player, the Warriors are unlikely to secure a playoff series victory this season
The Golden State Warriors are feeling optimistic as they head into the final stretch of the 2023-24 season. Stephen Curry’s recent outstanding performance, along with the effective use of Draymond Green as the starting center, has contributed to their success. Additionally, emerging talents like Jonathan Kuminga and Brandin Podziemski have become integral parts of the team.
Former Warriors player Tim Legler expressed skepticism about the team’s potential for a deep playoff run during an appearance on ESPN’s Get Up. He suggested that the Warriors might only be capable of reaching the first round of the playoffs at best and could even face an early exit in the play-in tournament at worst.
The former Warriors guard expressed his view, stating, “In the best-case scenario, they might face a first-round defeat. At worst, they could suffer a loss in the play-in tournament. I don’t believe Golden State has what it takes to make a significant postseason run. They lack size, defensive prowess, and several players are performing below their usual standards. It’s not just one individual; it’s a collective issue. While they’ve shown improvement recently, considering the competitiveness of the Western Conference, I doubt Golden State’s ability to win a playoff series.”
While Warriors fans may not appreciate Tim Legler’s perspective on the team’s playoff prospects, his concerns hold merit. The Warriors have encountered numerous challenges this season, including their persistent lack of size. Additionally, both Klay Thompson and Andrew Wiggins have experienced declines in their performance. With these two key players not performing at their peak, the Warriors may lack the elite wing talent necessary to complement a team led by Stephen Curry.
The Warriors currently trail the sixth spot in the Western Conference by five games. If they secure one of the lower four seeds in the playoffs, they’ll likely face tough opponents such as the Minnesota Timberwolves, Oklahoma City Thunder, Los Angeles Clippers, or Denver Nuggets. While the Warriors boast a strong playoff history, defeating any of these teams will pose a significant challenge, despite having an edge in overall playoff experience.
Certainly, the Warriors recognize that their chances of success in any playoff series significantly increase as long as Stephen Curry continues to perform at an elite level, consistently ranking among the top ten players in the NBA. This confidence in Curry’s abilities could serve as a driving force for the team as they aim to defy skeptics like Tim Legler and showcase their potential in the postseason.
