Wimbledon wasn’t the same without Roger Federer’s graceful presence this year. After all, the iconic London courts have witnessed his dominance for years – a record eight championship titles! But fear not, Federer fans! Trading his racquet for a chance to groove to the music of Coldplay, tennis legend Federer enjoyed a night out last week at Rome’s Olympic Stadium. He was spotted with his wife, Mirka, two daughters and sons (Myla, Charlene, Leo, and Lenny). The iconic band’s music clearly got him moving!
While they played “Fix You,” Federer and his wife Mirka were spotted dancing together, lost in the moment. The same infectious energy followed them during Chris Martin’s new song, “Feels Like I’m Falling in Love.” Interestingly, even amidst the crowd, Federer and Mirka’s matching white outfits caught the eye of Martin, who gave a special shoutout to the tennis legend during the concert.
“Roger, my beautiful brother, who is the greatest tennis player of all time. You were so good at sports, but who would have thought that you would show up looking so beautiful and fine?” Martin said while singing.
You might not only see Chris Martin on stage, but also the rest of the band: Jonny Buckland (guitar), Guy Berryman (bass), and Will Champion (drums). Founded in 1997, Coldplay is known for their electrifying performances. Fun fact: Last year, Federer himself joined(as a fifth member) them onstage for a song during their Zurich concert! He even shared backstage photos and a video of the performance on his Instagram, captioning it “Adventure of a Lifetime.” Looks like Federer’s a Coldplay fan too!
Coldplay wasn’t just thrilled to have Federer in the audience – they brought him right onto the stage! In a video uploaded by the band, Martin jokingly introduced the tennis legend as their “original band member” before inviting him to play percussion. The official post playfully asks, “Is there anything this man can’t do?” and thanks Federer for “coming back.” Federer, clearly enjoying the moment, simply captioned his response, “Night to remember.”
Undertaking Q&A with Jim Courier at 2023 Laver Cup, Swiss legend talked about singing with Coldplay. “I don’t know what I was doing! I was moving my hand and smiling. I was being me but I got the invitation from Chris Martin from Coldplay,” Federer said. “He said do you want to come up on stage tomorrow…” Federer revealed the surprising nudge he received from his daughter that convinced him to have a brief music career.
“I looked at my daughter and told her, ‘Do you think I should go on stage and do this?’ She was half falling asleep…she was like, ‘Of course papa, you only live once, of course you have to do it.’ So I was like, I’ll go on stage, I’ll do it and of course I enjoyed it. I finished on top. This was my music career. I dropped the mic and I was good.”
Coldplay’s ‘Music of the Spheres’ world tour has been a star-studded affair! Before Federer’s epic guest appearance, the band welcomed a whole roster of talented musicians to the stage. Fans were treated to performances with legends like Bruce Springsteen, Chvrches’ vocalist Lauren Mayberry, and hip-hop icons Craig David and Lupe Fiasco. It seems Coldplay loves sharing the spotlight with phenomenal artists!
But this time around, the 20 Grand Slam’s intimate moment with Mirka truly stole the show. The couple who met at the Summer Olympics have been together for over two decades now. “We met at the Sydney Games when I hadn’t won a title yet, so she has been with me almost every step of the way,” the Swiss player previously said. Often, Federer has spoken about the sacrifices that Mirka has gone through in order to support him. “The logistics were crazy and she has been incredible in this regard,” he once confessed.
Therefore, as the 42-year-old former player retired, more often than not, he is now there with his wife, either enjoying Vietnam, or Thailand or going to a live concert. They have rightfully earned it! Besides, during Federer’s hard times in his career, he revealed how his wife showed him the way out.
Federer shares the “important” role of his wife in his life
Roger married Mirka in a private ceremony in 2009. Since then, the duo has been an inspiration for many tennis couples as they navigated around the challenges of life together. “She has helped me a lot during difficult times and she has played a very important role in keeping me motivated. She also taught me what discipline is, because she is incredibly disciplined; I was more the player, the artist, if you will, and I needed guidance in that aspect.”
Even in Federer’s documentary, Federer: Twelve Final Days, he opened up about his wife’s tremendous support and guidance throughout his tenure in tennis. Describing one of the most emotional moments with his wife, he once said how his wife loves to watch him play tennis. “That is one of the most emotional moments because you see everything she has suffered with me,” he said.
Roger and Mirka Federer have cracked the code of a beautiful happy marriage and some occasional glimpses of their intimate moments leave us in awe!
