An interesting NFL divisional realignment proposal would see the Dallas Cowboys form three brand-new rivalries.
A graphic of NFL divisions being “re-imagined” has made its way around social media. The divisions were made up with the idea of reducing travel for all 32 NFL teams, with the Dallas Cowboys being moved into the “South” division.
That division would see Dallas form new rivalries with the Houston Texans, Tennessee Titans (both members of the AFC South) and the New Orleans Saints (in the NFC South). The Cowboys’ three NFC East rivals — the New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders — were placed in other divisions.
In this proposed realignment, the Eagles and Giants would move into the “Northeast Division” with the New York Jets and New England Patriots. The Commanders would move to the “Mid-Atlantic Division” with the Baltimore Ravens, Carolina Panthers and Cincinnati Bengals:
The NFL realigned its divisions in 2002 after the Texans’ expansion franchise brought the number of teams to 32. The league created eight divisions with four teams in each, keeping the Dallas Cowboys with the Giants, Eagles and Washington in the NFC East.
The Arizona Cardinals were part of the NFC East before being moved to the NFC West in 2002, along with the San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Rams.
Dallas Cowboys Aim To Break 20-Year NFC East Streak
Incredibly, the NFC East has not had a team repeat as division champions in 20 years, when the Philadelphia Eagles successfully defended the crown in 2004.
There has been a new winner every year since 2005, but the Eagles and Cowboys have largely dominated the division by combining to win it all but one year since 2016 (Washington won it in 2020). We’ll see if Dak Prescott and company can end the 20-year streak this upcoming season.
The Giants have the longest active division title drought, having last won it in 2011. That year, they went on to win Super Bowl 46.
