Ezekiel Elliott played for the Cowboys from 2016 to 2022 before leaving the team a year ago.

“They are a joke!” – Cowboys re-sign Ezekiel Elliott just a year after parting ways with him amid massive offseason RB drama, fans react

Even though the Dallas Cowboys couldn’t offer Dak Prescott his desired deal, they gave him a big surprise by bringing back Ezekiel Elliott.

But the quarterback isn’t the only reason why the franchise brought back their former running back, just a year after letting him go.

Elliott, who played for the Cowboys from 2016 to 2022, was in negotiation for his return to the NFL as Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones reportedly acknowledged interest in the running back amidst the whole offseason chaos.

NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero confirmed the news that both Dallas and Elliot have agreed to the deal on personal terms. At the time of writing, the details of his contract are yet to be released.

Due to their inactiveness during the NFL offseason, the Cowboys already missed many crucial players who could have been a weapon to their offense. After the draft, the Cowboys are still standing with what appears to be a solid plan, moving towards the 2024 season, for which they are already contested out of the Contenders list.

Despite having an immediate need for a solid running back, the Cowboys failed to find a prospect in the first three rounds of the draft. When Jones was asked about it, he dismissed the further discussion by saying the drafts were not over yet.

And it was a long time before a running back was taken in today’s draft. But we also are keenly interested in seeing what the future might look like with Zeke.

Jerry Jones said

In a broader sense, due to intense scrutiny surrounding the Cowboys’ need for a running back, they had no other option than to bring him the Pro Bowler. Jones also expressed his faith in Elliot believing he can play with the caliber of a starting quarterback.

Fan reaction to Ezekiel Elliott’s return to the Cowboys

Not that the whole offseason silence of the Cowboys wasn’t a disappointment for the fans, but this decision to bring back the 28-year-old running back once again doesn’t sit well with the fans. The Cowboys fans have lost all hope in their team, and the center of their criticism has been Jones.

Sharing a wide spectrum of reactions online, here’s what fans have to say:

Fans have been trolling the Cowboys for giving Elliot a vacation and then bringing him back with almost the same roster.

Some fans hoped for a positive outcome from this, believing Elliot could help the team win the NFC championship game. Perhaps the burden is now on Elliot to prove whether his return was worth it or not.
