Novak Djokovic failed to win his eighth title at Wimbledon after losing to Carlos Alcaraz for the second consecutive year on the Centre Court. While disappointed with his performance, the Serbian expressed satisfaction with his performance since recovering from knee surgery.
The 37-year-old picked up an injury at the French Open, which was later diagnosed to be a torn meniscus in his right knee. He went under the knife in Paris and worked hard to recover in time for the grass Major. Before his first game at SW19, there were doubts about how he would fare in his comeback.
Surprisingly, Djokovic put in some good performances to reach the final for the 10th time in his career. He defeated Vit Kopriva and Jacob Fearnley in the opening rounds, before beating Alexei Popyrin to enter the the second week. He then outclassed Holger Rune and received a walk-over to the semifinals after Alex de Minaur withdrew before their quarterfinal clash.
The Serbian beat Italian Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets to reach the final, where he was comprehensively beaten 6-2, 6-2, 7-6(4) by Alcaraz. After the defeat, Djokovic said that he was happy with his performances in London considering his recent injury troubles.
I have to be very proud. Obviously it’s a little bit of a disappointment right now. When I reflect on the last four of five weeks, and what I’ve been through, I have to say that I’m very satisfied.
Novak Djokovic said in his on-court interview
Djokovic will have another shot to win his 25th Grand Slam later this year at the US Open. The Serbian lost to Jannik Sinner in the semifinals at the Australian Open and withdrew from the French Open after the fourth round due to injury.
