Carlos Alcaraz has won his second successive Wimbledon men’s title after defeating Novak Djokovic in straight sets in front of the Princess of Wales and her daughter Charlotte.

The 21-year-old Spaniard won 6-2 6-2 7-6 (7-4) to defend the crown he earned last year and claim his fourth Grand Slam title.

Alcaraz was presented with the trophy on Centre Court by Princess Catherine who has stepped away from royal duties while she undergoes cancer treatment.

‘Honestly it is a dream for me winning this trophy,’ Alcaraz told the star-studded crowd that included A-list celebrities Tom Cruise and Julia Roberts.

‘I did an interview when I was 11 or 12 and said my dream is to win Wimbledon. I’m fulfilling my dream.’

Football fan Alcaraz is now hoping for a double Spanish celebration when Spain take on England in the Euro 2024 final.

‘I’ve already done my job, now let’s see the football,’ he smiled.

After he was presented with the trophy, Alcaraz met with Princess Kate and Princess Charlotte in the Wimbledon members’ area where the pair asked him who his favourite Spanish footballer was.

He then went out onto the Centre Court balcony where he was greeted by the crowd who were chanting ‘vamos, vamos’ in Spanish.

Alcaraz finished off the match in a tense but thrilling third set tiebreak with a devastating second serve.

He then jumped into the players’ box to celebrate with his team and family.

Having elected to receive, Alcaraz showed his intent from the off to break the Serb’s serve in a gruelling 14-minute opening game.

The 24-time Grand Slam winner had no answer to Alcaraz’s power as he broke again to take a commanding 4-1 lead at SW19 before seeing out the first set 6-2.

He then broke Djokovic’s serve twice in the second set to take a commanding two set lead.

Seven-time Wimbledon champion Djokovic fought back in the third and saved three match points after being broken in the ninth game and managed to take the third set to a tiebreak.

But Alcaraz went through the gears once more and claimed victory after Djokovic slammed the ball into the net off a devastating second serve.

A beaming Princess Kate was welcomed onto Centre Court this afternoon to huge cheers and applause.

It was just her second public engagement since announcing her cancer diagnosis in March.

The royal, who opted for a purple dress, is a huge tennis fan and is a patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.

A cute and confident Charlotte clearly enjoyed her Wimbledon experience as she was spotted clapping and cheering the players on.

Princess Kate arrived at the tennis tournament in SW19 less than an hour before the final was due to begin on Sunday afternoon.

Serbian Djokovic is bidding to become the oldest Wimbledon champion at the age of 37 and with it extend his record-breaking Grand Slam tally to 25.

Alcaraz showed his intent early on during a gruelling 14 minute opening game to break Djokovic’s serve after the Serb had saved four break points.

He then followed that up with hold of serve to 15 in a rapid three minute game that included a venomous 136mph serve.

The Spaniard went on to break Djokovic’s serve for a second time before easing to win the first set 6-2 in 41 minutes.

And just as in the first set Alcaraz broke the Djokovic serve in the first game of the second set before repeating the feat again to take a 5-2 lead.

At one point during the opening set Charlotte could be seen covering her mouth as she chatted away to her aunt and Kate’s sister Pippa Matthews.

Kate has been undergoing chemotherapy and made her first public appearance since announcing her cancer diagnosis in March at the Trooping the Colour ceremony in London last month.

She did not attend the women’s singles final on Saturday, and Wimbledon chairwoman Debbie Jevans presented the trophy to Barbora Krejcikova on her behalf.

Actors Tom Cruise, Julia Roberts and former tennis greats Andre Agassi, Lleyton Hewitt, Rod Laver, and Stan Smith were among the crowd.

Benedict Cumberbatch wore a blue suit while wife Sophie Hunter stunned in an eye-catching yellow dress as they arrived hand-in-hand.

Earlier in the tournament, Kate paid tribute to double champion Sir Andy Murray, saying he should be ‘so very proud’ after he missed out on a final chance at Wimbledon.

In a personally-signed message on social media, the princess wrote: ‘An incredible £Wimbledon career comes to an end. You should be so very proud @andy-murray. On behalf of all of us, thank you! C.’

Sir Andy was due to play mixed doubles with Emma Raducanu but the former US Open champion pulled out of the clash, citing stiffness in her right wrist.

Kate visited the championships several times last year and presented Alcaraz with his first Wimbledon trophy after watching him battle Djokovic in the men’s singles final.

On Friday, Kate missed a charity polo match as husband William took to the field to raise funds for good causes at Guards Polo Club in Windsor Great Park.

In a statement released last month, the princess revealed she is making good progress but ‘not out of the woods yet’ and has ‘good days and bad days’ as she continues her treatment.

The Prince of Wales, president of the Football Association, will be in Berlin later on Sunday to attend England’s Euro 2024 final against Spain.

Some spectators at Wimbledon could be seen wearing white England football shirts at the championships on Sunday morning.
