Des Moines, Iowa (NBC, KYMA/KECY) — Caitlin Clark, renowned for her basketball prowess and philanthropic spirit, recently made a heartwarming visit to North High School in Des Moines. The basketball star surprised students with a generous “Back to School Backpacks” giveaway and took the opportunity to inspire young athletes in the community.
On Friday afternoon, Clark, alongside her foundation team, distributed over 350 backpacks to students from both public and parochial schools in the Des Moines area. Each backpack was packed with essential school supplies, generously provided by Hy-Vee, and water bottles sponsored by Gatorade. Nike was instrumental in supplying the backpacks, ensuring that each student received a high-quality, practical gift to start the school year.
The event was organized by the Caitlin Clark Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting education, nutrition, and sports. Through this initiative, Clark aims to foster academic success and build self-confidence among students.
Clark expressed her joy at the event, stating, “Honestly, it makes me smile in return. Like for me, I am just myself—that is what I try to be, a great role model for them. I think it speaks to how I was raised as a kid. I have loved every second of playing sports, but also, my parents always preached there is always more to life than just sports. So understanding that really resonates with young kids. Just giving them something to smile about, taking a moment out of my day to give them a high five, sign their poster, whatever it is, can mean the world to them.”
The Caitlin Clark Foundation’s “Back to School Backpacks” event not only provided practical support but also served as an emotional boost for the students. By engaging directly with them and sharing her own experiences, Clark aimed to encourage students to strive for success both in and out of the classroom.
This thoughtful gesture underscores the foundation’s commitment to making a positive impact in the community, supporting young people as they navigate their educational journeys and personal growth.
