The WNBA season is currently on break as Team USA participates in the 2024 Paris Olympics. But with the league season resuming later this month, fans are already itching for more exciting women’s basketball action.
To add more fuel to that excitement, USA Today recently released its midseason rankings for Rookie of the Year.
Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese are the two unquestioned candidates for this year’s rookie award. And according to USA Today’s rankings, Clark leads the way by a large margin.
Fresh off setting an All-Star Game record for assists, Clark is the runaway favorite for the Rookie of the Year Award. Clark leads all rookies in points per game (17.1), assists per game (8.2), and steals per game (1.5). Clark has been so good that her absence on Team USA for the Olympics caused a bit of an uproar despite Clark failing to attend Team USA training camp while she competed for a college national championship.
Earlier in the year, the race between Clark and Reese was seemingly much closer. But when Clark began shattering all-time assist records at every turn, she started extending the gap between her and her Chicago Sky rival.
In the Indiana Fever’s final game before the Olympic break, Clark set the all-time single-game assist record with 19 dimes in a loss to the Dallas Wings. The former Iowa guard then followed that up with a rookie-record 10 assists in the 2024 WNBA All-Star Game.

Reese set the all-time WNBA record for consecutive double-doubles (15), averaging 13.5 points and 12.0 rebounds per game through the first half of her rookie campaign.
Clark and the Fever will resume their season with a matchup against the Phoenix Mercury on August 16. Reese and the Sky will face off against the Mercury just before that on August 15.
