Toni Nadal comments on Carlos Alcaraz's loss in the Olympic Final

The final of the Olympic tournament in Paris was very spectacular. Novak Djokovic pulled off a magnificent performance just when he needed it, defeating a 16-year-old younger opponent like Carlos Alcaraz and finally realizing his dream of winning the gold medal.Novak Djokovic Novak Djokovic© Getty Images Sport – Clive Brunskill

The 24-time Grand Slam champion had not arrived in Paris with the favourites of the prediction, having not won a single title in 2024 and having had knee surgery a few weeks ago. Also, the red clay of the French Open was much more suited to the characteristics of the 21 year old from Murcia. The serve has definitely made the difference in favor of Nole in the final, especially in the two tiebreaks that proved decisive. The former world number 1 burst into tears immediately after his victory, demonstrating how precious this gold medal was to him at 37.

During the press conference, Novak said he wanted to play for a long time and did not rule out his participation in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Despite having struggled in recent months, Djokovic is still number 2 in the world and will try to stay at the top for a few more years. The Serbian will miss the Masters 1000 in Montreal and should return to the court in Cincinnati, where he will have to defend last year’s title. The performance against Carlos Alcaraz in the final was definitely one of the best of Novak Djokovic’s career.

Toni Nadal on the Olympic final

Speaking with ‘El Pais’, Toni Nadal opened up on the Olympic final: “The images of Carlos crying on the court with obvious signs of grief and frustration left us feeling bitter, but they must not make us think that it is a defeat. He lost a match that could have been favorable to him, giving the best of himself at any time, fighting until the last ball as we know he usually does, and keeping in breath a whole country that took pleasure in watching him for his great tennis and his passion. His silver medal against the best tennis player in history is, without a doubt, worthy of our admiration.” The Spaniard ace will certainly have other chances to win the gold medal in the future, while for Nole Djokovic it was probably the last chance.

Darren Cahill, who currently coaches Jannik Sinner with Simone Vagnozzi, congratulates Novak Djokovic on his win at the 2024 Olympics. A long-sought victory by the current world number 2 who added to his collection of successes the only victory he still lacked. Olympic gold for his Serbia, which he had always missed in previous editions of the five-ring tennis tournament.

And Cahill, not directly involved in the Paris Olympics since his client Jannik Sinner has given up because of tonsillitis, from Canada where the world number 1 is engaged this week in the ATP Masters 1000 in Montreal has written a splendid message that leaves no room for doubt about his thinking. The Australian coach wrote of Novak Djokovic that the Serbian is the “best player tennis has ever known“.

Among the multitude of tributes that Novak Djokovic received after his gold medal at the Olympic Games, that of Darren Cahill, current coach of Italian ace Jannik Sinner, is very much felt.  Very impressed by the Serbian performance in the final against Carlos Alcaraz, the Australian manager wanted to give him an intense tribute. Here are his words: “An extraordinary result. An extraordinary career as an athlete and tennis player. The best the game has ever seen. Bravo, Novak. And congratulations to your entire team”.

Djokovic’s palmarés is finally complete

With the victory at the Paris Olympics, Novak Djokovic’s palmarés is finally complete. The 24-time Grand Slam champion has struggled a lot to achieve this result: “This supersedes everything that I imagined and hoped I could experience and feel. The fact I won the bronze in my first Olympic Games and ever since then failed to win a medal despite playing in three semi-finals… I couldn’t overcome that obstacle. Now, at age 37 (I was able to beat) a 21-year-old that is probably the best player in the world right now. When I take everything into consideration, this is probably the biggest sporting success I’ve had in my career.Carlos Alcaraz and Novak DjokovicCarlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic© Getty Images Sport – Matthew Stockman

Those other Olympic Games where I lost in the semi-finals and wasn’t able to bring a medal for many years to my country, that was catching up to me and building the pressure even more and more. So that’s why where I am at this moment in my career and life, it stands out as the highest of the highest.”
