Patrick Mahomes Joked That He ‘Hates’ Celtics Player After Absurd NBA Finals Shot

Payton Pritchard became an NBA champion on Monday night, but he didn’t make many friends out in Texas in the process.

The Boston Celtics dominated from the start in Monday’s decisive Game 5 of the NBA Finals against the Dallas Mavericks, ultimately winning 106-88. For many, the game felt over right at the halftime buzzer, when Pritchard drilled a ridiculous half-court shot. The shot extended the Celtics’ lead to 67-46. Dallas never posed a significant threat to come back in the game in the second half.

As Pritchard’s shot went through, Kansas City Chiefs superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes — a Texas native and Mavericks fan — had the perfect reaction on X (formerly Twitter).

“Bro i hate this dude,” Mahomes tweeted, adding a litany of cry-laughing emojis.

Laughing through the tears was an appropriate reaction for Dallas fans, given how Game 5 played out. Pritchard’s shot was also indicative of the series as a whole.

The former Oregon star only scored 17 points through the entire NBA Finals, and Monday’s three was his only shot attempt of the night, but he really made his scores count in the series. The half-court shot was his second of the Finals after he drilled one in Game 2 as well, his only made basket of that game.

Per Stathead, Pritchard became the first player in NBA Finals history with two 30-plus-foot buzzer beaters with the shot.
