The logo choose between his Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant and Lebron James
NBA legend Jerry West passed away today at the age of 86. Known as the iconic logo of the NBA, West’s insights into basketball were highly valued, having spent over six decades in the league.
Throughout his career, he witnessed the evolution of the game and knew almost every significant player in NBA history.
During the 1960s, when West’s career was at its peak, the Boston Celtics, led by Bill Russell, were the dominant force in the league. Despite the Celtics’ dominance, West made a significant mark, winning a championship and uniquely earning a Finals MVP in 1969 even though his team didn’t win the championship.
West’s comprehensive experience gave him a unique perspective on the game’s greatest players. On Terrell Owens’ podcast “Getcha Popcorn Ready” in 2022, West expressed his views on the greatest of all time (GOAT) debate involving Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and LeBron James.
He praised Michael Jordan for consistency and unmatched defensive prowess, highlighting Jordan’s 10 scoring titles, three steals’ titles, and numerous defensive accolades.
Comparatively, Kobe Bryant, despite his impressive career, secured two scoring titles and 12 All-Defensive Team selections but never led in steals or won a Defensive Player of the Year award. LeBron James has one scoring title and six All-Defensive Team selections. Statistically, Jordan’s achievements surpass both Bryant’s and James’s, leading West to hint at Jordan as his pick for the GOAT.
Jerry West disliked the frequent comparisons and debates over who the greatest player is, mentioning the presence of many “baby GOATs” in today’s NBA, reflecting the ever-improving quality of players in the league. This outlook underscores how the NBA continues to be a hub of talent, growing more competitive with each passing year.
