When July comes each year, Novak Djokovic already has a host of titles almost every time. However, the year 2024 has been a stark contrast to what the Serb has achieved in his illustrious career. The 24-time Grand Slam champion has been hit with poor form and fitness that has prevented him from digging deep in the tournaments. As a result, he is yet to win a title this year, with more than half of the season already done and dusted.
Nonetheless, fans have stood behind him during these tough times and have retained the belief that Djokovic can make a strong comeback later this year. Earlier this week, Jimmy Connors’ son, Brett Connors explained why expectations are so high on Djokovic.
A few days ago, a new episode of the Tennis Channel Inside-In podcast dropped where Brett Connors opened up about Djokovic’s performance this year. Subsequently, he went on to unearth the reason behind fans rallying behind the Serb and expecting him to win tournaments.
He said, “Yeah, that’s the thing. Our expectations are so high, but in reality he’s probably the 3rd best player in the world at worst. You know, like the guys who have beaten them lately. The Djoker I mean, Carlos and Sinner, but on any given day, you can see Djoker popping up and beating those guys still feel like so.”

At 37, retirement isn’t too far for Djokovic. With a greater challenge coming from youngsters like Alcaraz and Sinner, Djokovic has his task cut out to prevail in tournaments. Connors went on to add, “I don’t think we’re past the time where he’s, you know, still a top guy can play as long as he wants to as long as the body you know, hangs in there.”
Djokovic is aiming to win the elusive Olympic gold medal at the Paris Olympics. However, he has received a nightmarish draw despite being the top seed.
Novak Djokovic delivers a strong statement on the Olympic draw
After Jannik Sinner withdrew from the Paris Olympics, Djokovic was named the top seed in men’s singles. He will open his campaign against Matthew Ebden of Australia. However, the real challenge will come in the second round, with a potential clash against Rafael Nadal.
Djokovic was optimistic about his chances and said, “I am very excited and have high expectations for the Olympics. I feel good respect and I feel more ready than I was before Wimbledon. The fact that I am not a favorite in the odds is a motivation for me. The Olympic Games have always been a big challenge for me. I focused all the preparation on this tournament.”
While Djokovic lost in the finals of the Wimbledon Championships recently, Nadal is battling physical troubles ahead of the Olympics. Nonetheless, we all are aware of how dangerous Nadal is, even if not fully fit. Thus, it promises to be thrilling times ahead for tennis fans.
