Danny Green likes the chances of his 2020 Los Angeles Lakers squad over newly-crowned NBA champion Boston Celtics. In his recent appearance in the Lakers Nation Podcast, the 14-year veteran expressed his belief that they would prevail over the C’s in a hypothetical seven-game showdown.

“It’s a different game. Luckily, those two teams aren’t that far moved in today’s game. The rules aren’t changed as much. … But to those two teams, they match up very well. I think we are deeper at the big position. If we keep Avery Bradley, we have multiple defenders that can guard those guys. And ultimately they would’ve been younger than us so we have the experience on them. I forgot we had Rondo. You had Rondo behind Bron. Like all those minds, point guards, wings, positions, the mental part of it, I think we would win at 6,” Green argued.

Green believes Bubble Lakers would beat the ‘24 Celtics

Spearheaded by LeBron James and Anthony Davis, the Lakers steamrolled as the league’s best in 2020. They dominated and clinched the championship within the NBA Bubble in one of the most unprecedented seasons ever. As for this year’s 64-win Celtics, they have historically phenomenal records, topnotch numbers, and a 16-3 playoff run they had en route to the title, boasting a stacked starting five of Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Kristaps Porzingis, Jrue Holiday, and Derrick White.

Still, that being said, DG is convinced that he and the Lakers would completely edge the 2024 Celtics from the experience level, mind games, and mental warfare.

“It depends on the timing. If we’re talking about 2024 today, we probably too old. But 2020, I think we would got them,” he said. “They are a little bit younger, a little bit more inexperienced. I think they’re a very good team, but they showed some holes to me and some vulnerability. Not saying that we weren’t either, but I think we have the mindset that knows how to attack that and kinda make some of those guys show up to the big stage that aren’t ready for it.”

Weighing the case of the Lakers vs. Celtics

Regardless of what people may perceive about their triumph in the NBA Bubble, the 2019-20 Lakers have been superb and a champion squad for a reason. They boasted an incredibly balanced roster from top to bottom that can play on both ends of the floor. From their wings (Green, Kyle Kuzma, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Alex Caruso, Avery Bradley), frontline depth (AD, Dwight Howard, JaVale McGee, Markieff Morris), and incredible playmakers in Bron and Rajon Rondo, the Lakers were a locked and loaded, defensive juggernaut that can play any group in every era.

Meanwhile, the 2023-24 Celtics have been tremendous on offense and defense as well. While they have sparkling firepower and lights-out shooting, they also present a strong defensive presence in all areas. Their core might be relatively young compared to the Lakers, but they are a battle-tested squad that, based on what they have achieved throughout the years, holds a robust argument to be regarded as one of the greatest teams of all time.

Imagining a matchup between these two squads could be a toss-up on who would come out on top. However, fans would eagerly pay to see this showdown, featuring the best rosters from two of the league’s most dominant teams in recent years.
