NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has admitted that he saw Chennedy Carter’s foul on Caitlin Clark as a “welcome to the WNBA” moment for the rookie – as he appeared to be in agreement with Whoopi Goldberg.
Having already been the subject of rough treatment from opposition players during the early weeks of her professional career, the Indiana Fever star was pushed to the ground in the clash with the Chicago Sky. The incident proved controversial, with Carter’s actions eventually upgraded from a common foul to a flagrant-1 violation.
The barge during the third quarter of the clash in Indianapolis sparked debate within the basketball community over Clark’s treatment since her move to the WNBA. The incident was even addressed on “The View,” as the co-host Goldberg revealed her stance on the debacle.
“Let’s be realistic, OK? This is basketball,” she said as she refused to show too much sympathy towards Clark, saying: “This happens in basketball all the time. Angel Reese got clotheslined the other day. They’re there to win. And just because they’re women, get over yourselves, they’re athletes.”
Now, Silver has waded into the debate, seemingly agreeing, saying: “As a fan, obviously, it’s nothing new in basketball that there’s sort of ‘welcome to the league’ moments, especially for heralded rookies,” before diplomatically continuing: “But of course, I want to see Caitlin treated fairly and appropriately in the league.
“It seems like she could take care of herself. She’s a tough player. I think it might be lost on some people who are new to basketball in terms of the controversy in the WNBA what an incredible talent she is: two Final Fours, leading scorer in the history of college basketball. I look forward to watching her ongoing development in the league.”

Silver also gave his view on comments from Pat McAfee, who apologized after his words about Clark, as the NBA commissioner called his remarks a “misstep.” He said: “Look I’d say Pat McAfee, that’s what you’re referring to, he apologized, and I accept that.
“I think that the way media works these days with people who are on live for hours, they’re going to occasionally misstep and I think what’s important is the context, their intention and sort of what they’re willing to say after having done that.”
Silver added: “I’ll leave it to ESPN to make the wrong personnel decisions about consequences and things like that. But I accept that in a free society where there is a lot of conversation, a lot of dialogue and I think for the WNBA, of course it’s going to be a two-edge sword.”
