At one point, many were convinced that Dr. J has become the new Elgin Baylor.

Both Julius Erving and Elgin Baylor are basketball legends who have left an indelible mark on the sport. Baylor was a dominant force on the court who reigned in the NBA from the late ’50s all the way through the entire ’60s. On the other hand, Dr. J possessed identical skills and eventually succeeded Elg, dominating the ABA and the NBA in the ’70s.

Due to Baylor’s lasting impact on the game, fans remained convinced that he was the ultimate all-around player even during Erving’s time. However, after Dr. J dropped 47 points and 10 rebounds in Game 1 of the 1974 ABA Finals, New York Nets coach Kevin Loughery declared that Erving had already surpassed Elg.

“Baylor was the best player for a longer time. But Doc is a better all-around player than Baylor ever was. Doc can do everything Baylor could do on offense and more, and he plays better defense,” Loughery remarked at the time.

Doc’s game was inspired by Elg

Unsurprisingly, Erving idolized Baylor growing up. He was dazzled by Elg’s athleticism, scoring prowess, and innovative style of play. In fact, to this day, Dr. J still vividly recalls how he used to watch Baylor’s games with unexplainable admiration.

Despite becoming a celebrated basketball superstar himself, Erving’s Baylor fandom did not end. He remained an avid Elg fan to date, and he always had the Lakers legend on his GOAT list.

“My guy growing up was Elgin Baylor. I’m watching TV, I’m probably eight, nine, ten years old,” Erving once revealed. “His game was seemingly a little unorthodox. He was strong, agile, hostile, mobile. I was like, ‘I like that guy.'”

Different eras, same pioneers

Some may or may not agree with Coach Loughery on picking Erving over Baylor as the best all-around player back then, but the said comment speaks to the greatness of both legendary players. While opinions may vary on who holds such titles, there is no denying the impact that two high-flyers had on the game.

Dr. J finished his 16-year career as a 16-time All-Star and a two-time ABA and one-time NBA champion. Baylor, meanwhile, was an 11-time All-Star and a 10-time All-NBA selectee. In conclusion, both “The Doctor” and Elg stand as pillars of basketball history, each leaving a legacy that continues to inspire and awe basketball fans all over the world.
