One Piece is quite well known for the creative variety of Devil Fruits, which grant users supernatural abilities that defy reason and logic. However, like most shonen, fighters also have the means to use spiritual energy. Haki is a power system that lets users manifest energy directly from their sheer willpower. Busoshoku bestows armor via aura, Kenbunshoku provides extra perception, and Haoshoku overpowers the wills of others.

The manga is considered the official source material of the series proper. Nonetheless, there are several adaptations that aren’t necessarily canon. These range from video games and novels to popular anime films and filler television episodes. There are several Haki users that could’ve had potential in the main story had they been canon. From the Kung-Fu Dugong to the strong Douglas Bullet, they vary in prowess and strength.

Caesar Retrieval Arc

Shortly after the events of Punk Hazard, in a filler arc exclusive to the One Piece anime, Luffy is forced to retrieve a recently abducted Caesar Clown. However, the Straw Hat is captured in turn by a clever villain known as Breed. With the power of the Peto Peto no Mi, he can produce green collars made of gel and force victims wearing it to obey his commands. Luffy must team up with the Sea Animal Pirates, so they can save the day.

As their name suggests, the crew is entirely made up of animals. Captain Kung-Fu Dugong is abnormal in that he can somehow use Haki, a power that’s exclusive to humanoid species in the manga. It’s really interesting to think about, since this particular one had already met Luffy back in Alabasta. That means he was motivated to become stronger through sheer will power, which suggests intelligence comparable to humans.

9Komei is a Genius Tactician For The Marines

The ”White Feather” is a Callback to More Creative Battle Strategies

Komei with an evil grin in One Piece

Busoshoku
Intelligence, wind-based attacks
Adventure of Nebulandia

Vice Admiral Komei only shows up in one special, where the Marines plan to intercept a fight between the Straw Hats and Foxy Pirates. He’s a very corrupt man who is willing to sacrifice loyal soldiers in the name of his brand of justice. With a particular disdain towards pirates, he often lays out traps for them via the foggy island Nebulandia.

Komei is among the very few One Piece characters with the ability to fully coat his entire body with Haki. Furthermore, he can also weaponize his fan to grow in size via Busoshoku Haki. It’s a creative application of the power system that’s rarely seen in canon. Komei even puts up a good fight against post time-skip Luffy.

8Shuzo Blasts Away Enemies With Alpacacin

Z’s Ambition Arc

The Longarm Tribe is a race of people with extra joints in their arms. They are rarely given any focus beyond Scratchmen Apoo of the Supernovas. Former commodore Shuzo is a loudly authoritative bully who puts his extra joints to good use via superhuman martial arts. Shuzo wants to be a second commander to Z of the Neo Marines.

He also carries a pet bazooka named Alpacacino, a weapon that somehow consumes a Zoan Devil Fruit, which he can use to fire off bullets coated with Busoshoku Haki. The Alpacacino is among only two animals with the ability to use Haki, but what makes it special is that it used to be a normal bazooka. Had it been canon, it would’ve raised philosophical questions.

7Naguri Once Met The Pirate King Himself

If Only He Saw What Luffy And His Brothers Would Become

Naguri from the One Piece Series with a worried look

Types of Haki

Original Debut

Haoshoku

”Apprentice Luffy!? The Man who Fought the Pirate King!?!”

The Post-War Arc from the manga is significantly expanded on in the anime. Naguri only appears in some filler episodes, but he does play an important role in Luffy’s childhood development. Formerly a pirate, he was soundly defeated by Gol D. Roger many decades ago. He used to be content with just living in the Gray Terminal, but with the help of Luffy, Ace, and Sabo, he rebuilds a ship to continue his dreams of finding his old crewmates.

Naguri is among two non-canon users proficient in Haoshoku Haki, the other being Douglas Bullet, who also has quite a history with the former Pirate King. The elderly man mainly uses it to scare away bears. Assuming he is still alive, it would’ve been fascinating to see his reaction to Luffy’s meteoric rise in the world of piracy.

Over three decades ago, there was a fearsome pirate who destroyed everything within his path. It didn’t matter whether they were innocent civilians or despicable World Nobles. Byrnndi World never forgave the World Government for his imprisonment after they convinced his crew to betray him. A bounty of 500,000,000 berries was quite impressive during the timeskip, even if the One Piece series has power crept it since then.

World is a former Impel Down prisoner who was sentenced to the lowest possible level, but he eventually broke-out after Luffy and Blackbeard caused trouble. He makes very good use of his Busoshoku Haki, since he can either augment parts of his body or the entire thing. With the power of the Moa Moa no Mi, he can also touch objects to increase their speed and size, giving him great versatility in battle.

Gild Tesoro is a tragic villain who adds layers to Eiichiro Oda’s massive world building. A former slave who lost the love of his life to World Nobles, he was driven insane by his lack of wealth to buy her freedom. The ”Casino King” dedicated the rest of his life to becoming a god of gold, and even consumed the Goru Goru in Mi, so he could manipulate the material. He ran the world’s largest entertainment hub, Gran Tesoro.

He only demonstrates Haki in the video game One Piece: Burning Blood. Regardless, a lot of fans don’t care about his fighting prowess so much as they like his backstory and the colorful inhabitants of Gran Tesoro. Had the film been canon, so would the very popular Carina, a beautiful thief with a friendly rivalry against Nami.

4Douglas Bullet is Truly Raw Power Incarnate

He’s Easily The Strongest Non-Yonko Pirate From The Movies

Douglas Bullet smiles as he reveals himself to the Worst Generation in One Piece: Stampede

Types of Haki
Special Abilities
Original Debut

Busoshoku, Kenbushoku, and Haoshoku
Superhuman physical stats, mechanical expertise
One Piece Film: Stampede

One Piece Film: Stampede makes it abundantly clear that Douglas Bullet is among the strongest pirates alive. A former apprentice of the Roger Pirates, the monstrous brute is a force to be reckoned with. He’s strong enough to wipe out entire countries by himself. Bullet was formerly a Level Six prisoner from Impel Down before he broke out. Not only did he awaken his Devil Fruit, he’s also among the very few fighters with Haoshoku Haki.

Douglas imbues his powerful Haki onto mechanical structures that he creates via the Gasha Gasha no Mi, which lets him telekinetically assemble objects together. He definitely would shake up the power balance of the world if he were canon. As a further testament of his power, he only ever tasted defeat at the hands of past and future Pirate Kings, via Roger and Luffy, respectively. Douglas is a dangerous menace to society.

3Patrick Redfield is Roger’s Former Rival

”Red the Aloof” Has Quite A Storied History Among The Seas

Kenbushoku
Vampire powers, exceptional agility
One Piece: Unlimited World Red

One Piece: Unlimited World Red is a Nintendo DS game that features a vicious pirate known as Patrick Refield. According to lore, he was strong enough to fight Roger and Whitebeard in their primes, which is exceptionally impressive. Red can turn into a vampire with his Mythical Zoan Devil Fruit, giving him the ability to look cool while he sucks blood from his victims. He gives the Straw Hats a hard time when they have to deal with him.

Red can presumably use Kenbunshoku Haki, given his incredible reaction time whenever he dodges attacks. Kaido also once told Luffy that Haki transcends everything, which means Red would have to possess more abilities not shown, otherwise he wouldn’t be a rival to Roger in the first place. It would’ve been awesome to see him during his glory days.

2Jonathan is Still a Favorite Among Fans

He’s Beloved For His Kindness Among His Men

Jonathan from the G-8 filler arc in One Piece

G-8 Arc

The G-8 filler arc takes place after the Sky Island Saga, so it’s very early in the series’ run. However, despite its non-canon status, it’s highly regarded by the One Piece fandom. The Straw Hats take it slightly easy in a breather arc, so there’s a bigger focus on comedy, such as the Condoriano ruse they pull off to escape a Marine base. Vice Admiral Jonathan is the poster boy for the G-8 arc, which is why he’s so well liked.

Jonathan is a very honorable leader who cares deeply for his men, a sharp contrast to most antagonists in the series. The Marine organization requires all their Vice Admirals to know basic Haki, so he should at least know how to use it. Despite this, he never fights Luffy directly and prefers to outsmart his enemies. He does show up in a few movies, so it would’ve been nice to see his actual fighting prowess.

Z adds far more than he subtracts in the One Piece narrative. His deep hatred for pirates stems from two separate tragic incidents, namely the murder of his family and the loss of his arm during a massacre. His absolute mastery of Busoshoku Haki is what earned him the name ”Black Arm.” Luffy would eventually prove to him that not all pirates are morally corrupt, but not without testing himself in a really grueling battle.

The former Marine instructor could easily fit into the manga, which is why so many fans are disappointed that he’s not canon. Z built a very strong relationship with his former students, mainly with Kuzan and Borsalino, who deeply respected their admirable teacher. The most poignant scene of the film is when Z ultimately sacrifices himself to save the Straw Hats, allowing himself to be taken out by his reluctant Marine proteges.
