Former Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Jacoby Jones has reportedly passed away.
Jones was the star of Super Bowl 47, having caught the “Mile High Miracle” during the run to the big game and scoring two touchdowns against the San Francisco 49ers once he got there.
The Baltimore Sun reports having received confirmation of the former player’s passing from an NFL source with direct knowledge.
Jones was 40.
The former WR and returner only spent three seasons with the Ravens, playing in their uniform from 2012 to 2014, but is considered a hero among fans due to his 56-yard touchdown catch and 108-yard kick return for a touchdown to start the second half of the game that helped fire Baltimore to a 34-31 win.
Jones, an All-Pro and Pro Bowler in 2012, also played for the Houston Texans, Pittsburgh, and San Diego Chargers, spending nine years in the league. The aforementioned kick return is the third longest in NFL history; he also repeated the feat two years later in a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
He ended his career with 203 receptions, 2,733 yards, and 14 touchdowns in 128 games. He also registered 4,940 yards and five scores as a kick returner, adding 2,688 yards and four TDs as a punt returner.
Here’s What Folks Had To Say About Baltimore Ravens Super Bowl Hero Jacoby Jones
“He was the best, he loved everyone,” Sam Gordon, who owns the Beaumont Renegades, told KPRC 2. “I think one of the most important things is he was a man of God. He was proud of how much he loved and feared his God. What was most important to him after football was helping the next person in line. He was the most humble and kind person to anybody who gave him the time and needed the time from him.”
J.J. Watt, a former teammate of Jacoby’s in Houston, said the former player was “one of the most fun-loving teammates and people I’ve ever been around.”
“Always dancing and laughing, with a permanent smile on his face,” he added. “Gone far, far too soon. R.I.P Jacoby Jones.”
Jones was living in Missouri at the time of his passing. No cause of death has been reported.
Our hearts go out to Jones’ family, friends, and loved ones.
Rest in peace, Jacoby Jones.
