With the start of the NBA draft 2024, fans are keeping an eye on the San Antonio Spurs. Last year, they had recruited the overall first pick – Victor Wembanyama. But till now Wembanyama hasn’t found the perfect teammates who can help him to glory. Therefore, the Spur followers are extremely excited about the upcoming NBA draft which can give them a chance of rebuilding the team.
One of the players that the enthusiasts are looking forward to is Providence’s Devin Carter. Not many know that he is the son of a former NBA player and therefore has learnt the tricks of the trade from a highly qualified professional.
Devin Carter’s family and early childhood
Carter was born to the former NBA guard Anthony Carter and Cassie Burns Carter on March 18, 2002, in Miami Florida. He also has another brother named Joshua Carter but his parents have separated. Anthony Carter is the assistant coach for the Memphis Grizzlies whereas his mother is extremely active on social networking site Instagram and posts regularly.
Since he had basketball in genes it is obvious he excelled at it and chose to express his liking for the game at the Cherry Creek High School in Colorado. He then moved to the Doral Academy where he plied his trade and impressed all. However, an injury ended his time at the Doral and then he decided to continue his game for the Brewster Academy.
Devin Carter’s college life
The Florida-born played 30 games for the Gamecocks in his freshman year. Unfortunately, he could only start in 7 games. He played for an average of 18.7 minutes per game in his first year and scored 9 points per match with 3.8 rebounds per game. Carter who was known for his offense had a poor time with the Gamecocks along with finding it difficult to make it in the starting five. It is speculated that these reasons got him to transfer to the Providence Friars.
Carter represented the Friars for the next two seasons where he honed his skills and came into his own. During the 2022-23 season, Carter started in all 33 games he played, smashing 13 points per match with 4.9 rebounds per game. However, he reserved the best of his abilities for his final year with the Friars.
In his next year with Providence, Carter had an astounding 19.7 points per contest. He assumed a major role in the team and was depended on with responsibilities. His rebound average also grew from 4.9 to 8.7 which was an exponential and unexpected rise considering he plays in the position of a guard. For his exceptional performances, Carter was named the Big East Player of the Year and he won the Big East First Team.
Anthony Carter’s hard work surely shows in his son Devin and fans would be hoping that Carter Jr. can converge his years of brilliance into one singular moment when he gets drafted by the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA and gets a chance to share the biggest stage with one of the best players of this generation Victor Wembanyama.
