An ESPN commentator did give context as to why the MLB shortstop made the error

MLB fans were in laughter after seeing a brutal error made by San Francisco Giants shortstop Nick Ahmed.

The sequence took place in the bottom of the second inning between the Giants and the home team Philadelphia Phillies on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball.

The Giants were leading 1-0 in the inning when Phillies star Alec Bohm stepped up to the plate. Facing Giants ace pitcher Logan Webb, Bohm hit a routine groundball towards the shortstop Ahmed, who is a two-time Gold Glove winner.

Ahmed fielded the ball cleanly, but as he was about to make the throw, his left cleat seemed to catch in the dirt. The 34-year-old stumbled, launching the ball over the opposing team’s dugout.

Bohm capitalized on Ahmed’s error, advancing to second base. He later crossed home plate, scoring after four more batters came to the plate.

However, MLB fans were predominantly focused on Ahmed and his costly mistake.

“If you haven’t had a cleat get caught on a throw at least once, then you didn’t play enough,” one said.

“Whoa,” another wrote.

“That was funny,” a third commented.

ESPN commentator Eduardo Perez did bring up the fact that the dirt was wet from the rain from the day before and could’ve played a role in Ahmed’s trip and air-mailed throw.

The Phillies went on to win 5-4 and improved to 24-11.

During the game, Philadelphia star Bryce Harper hit a towering 410-foot three-run shot.

The Phillies have the best record in baseball.

They’ve won five in a row and are 9-1 in their last 10 contests.

Philadelphia will go for their fourth sweet of the season Monday night against the Giants.
