Victor Wembanyama has already started to figure out the nuances of the way basketball is played in the NBA.
Paul George sends warning to the entire NBA about San Antonio Spurs rookie phenom Victor Wembanyama’s rise
Victor Wembanyama‘s first few months in the NBA were dampened by bad team play leading to losses. But in the 2nd half of the season, performances showed that he is starting to adjust to the league better. That progression helped the San Antonio Spurs win over the then-reigning NBA Champions towards the end of the season. Superstar Paul George, after observing all that had an interesting take.
Paul George‘s co-host of his podcast, Podcast P with Paul George, asked him what he made about Wembanyama’s progression.
The way he finished the year, I think it's scary for the league. Because I think the way he finished the year was the momentum he needed going into the summer. It's just the personnel is not ready for all that he brings and his talents.Paul George on Podcast P with Paul George
George has seen that progression up front. The 9-time All-Star has seen how Victor Wembanyama has made strides in his game. Enough to help his team have a winning record in the last month of the regular season.
Going into year 2, Paul George feels the Frenchman will only continue to grow. He is learning the nuances of the game and will apply it this season. It will also help that his teammates have played with him and know how to deploy Gregg Popovich‘s schemes.
Therefore, next season could be a breakout season for the 7′ 4″ center. He might not reach the MVP level discussions others have projected him to be. Nevertheless, if he progresses at a good rate, the San Antonio Spurs will start looking toward bringing in superstars to complement their young center.
Victor Wembanyama needs help but not right now
Usually, when young rookies improve to be stars of their teams, the front office looks to bring in superstars to speed up the charge to the playoffs. Victor Wembanyama already hinted that stars have reached out to him, wanting to team up. However, the San Antonio Spurs do not work that way.
Ever since Gregg Popovich has taken the reins, the Spurs are a team that thrives on their system. They will first try their luck in the draft and develop those players throughout a couple of seasons. If they see plausible improvement, only then will they think about bringing in a veteran superstar. Therefore, in all likelihood, the San Antonio Spurs might not be aggressive in this year’s market.
Rather, they will wait to see how Victor Wembanyama and his young teammates develop in their 2nd year of playing together. Then they will seek out a superstar or two who will fit perfectly alongside their NBA Rookie of the Year.
