President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, announced his resignation after his term ended. According to British media, the reason for his resignation is related to two athletes’ gender controversy.

Mr. Thomas Bach began his role as IOC President in 2013. Up to now, this 70-year-old man has served two terms as IOC President. However, at the 142nd session of the IOC held yesterday, Mr. Thomas Bach announced his resignation.

He shared: “After more than 11 years as IOC President, I will step down. This organization will develop better when there is a change in leadership. I think I am not the best person. The new era needs new leaders. The IOC is forced to change to become better.”

Thomas Bach will remain in the IOC until March 2025, when IOC members will meet in Greece to elect a new president. The German added: “To protect the credibility of the IOC, all of us, and especially myself, must respect the highest standards of governance. I am ready to help the IOC in the future.”

According to the Guardian and Mirror, Thomas Bach’s decision to resign was related to two boxers suspected of having a sexual orientation, Imane Khelif (Algeria) and Lin Yu Ting (Chinese Taipei). Thomas Bach’s decision to resign came shortly after he rejected the idea that the exclusion of these two athletes from the Olympics was to ensure fairness to other female boxers .

The IOC president has always expressed his support for the two athletes whose gender was questioned. He said: “This is not a question of inclusion. This is a question of justice. Women must be allowed to compete in women’s competitions. Both athletes are women.

It’s not as simple as people describe XX or XY as a clear distinction between men and women. That’s not scientifically true anymore. They are born female and need to compete in women’s tournaments.”

Despite Thomas Bach’s statement, the opposition to the two athletes Imane Khelif and Lin Yu Ting continues. The International Boxing Federation (IBA) continues to emphasize that they are… men and are not allowed to compete in women’s tournaments. Previously, the IBA banned the two athletes from competing in world boxing tournaments from 2023. Many fans also expressed dissatisfaction with the IOC’s decision to allow them to compete in the Olympics.

The Guardian emphasized: “The IOC’s explanation is not convincing. The controversy broke out fiercely, many lawsuits were sent. Many people think that the IOC has broken its rules, seriously affecting the image of the organization. Allowing female athletes with such bulging muscles to compete in the Olympics is unusual.”
