P.K. Subban tore into the Edmonton Oilers, criticizing one of their biggest weaknesses, apparently to the displeasing of Oiler legend Mark Messier.
Subban, the longtime former NHL defenseman, ripped into the Oilers defense, who have been struggling in the Stanley Cup Finals, failing to contain the dominant Florida Panthers. Subban called the Oilers D “soft”, criticizing their inability to stop Florida’s scoring chances.
The comments seemed to hit at a common criticism of the Oilers throughout the series, but one person seemed unhappy, Mark Messier.
Messier, the long-time Oilers star forward, spent twelve seasons in Edmonton as a superstar alongside Wayne Gretzky in the 1980’s Oilers, winning 5 Stanley Cups, his fifth without Gretzky, and his first as the leading man on the team after Gretzky’s trade to the Los Angeles Kings.
Subban, who spent 12 years in the NHL for the Montreal Canadiens, Nashville Predators, and New Jersey Devils, knows a thing or two about a successful blueline, and wasted no time adding a critique, leaving the offensive star Messier a bit unhappy with the criticism.
What Messier was thinking, who knows? But the former Oilers star can’t be entirely pleased seeing his old team struggling this way. Edmonton is currently down 3-0 in the finals to the Florida Panthers, with tomorrow a potential dagger on the team’s season.
