Britain’s Got Talent viewers have slammed a new format for the show.

The ITV talent competition came to an end on Sunday night as the winner Sydnie Christmas was crowned. However many fans took issue with how the winner was announced. All 11 finalists appeared on stage at the same time and were whittled down one by one until the winner was revealed. Typically, just the top three acts are revealed in order. Viewers branded the move “cruel” and awkward”.

Hosts Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly read out the order of contestants, with a leaderboard appealing behind them and placing the acts from 11th to first. One fan said: “Bit cruel to list the positions.” Another added: “Don’t agree with the worst to best thing. Should be top 3 only

#bgt.” Someone else commented: “I can’t believe they’re doing complete order from last to first.. bit awkward #BGT.” A fourth wrote: “The act in 11th place being announced oh Jesus that’s a bit cruel #BGT.” A fan urged: “Just do the Top 3 #BGT #BritainsGotTalent,” as another shared: “Reverse order is BRUTAL #BGT.”

Someone else simply said: “Reverse order?! Harsh! #BGT #BGTFinal,” and another added: “Ranking is crazyyy #bgt.” Singer Sydnie Christmas was crowned winner of the 2023 series. Speaking after her win, she said: “I cannot believe the amount of love I’ve felt since it aired. It’s absolutely – oh my god. I am overwhelmed with love and I wish for one day that everyone feels the way I do. It’s amazing, thank you so much.”

Britain’s Got Talent returned for its 17th season earlier this year, as acts made their way through the competition to reach tonight’s final. Simon Cowell, Bruno Tonioli, Amanda Holden and Alesha Dixon have been giving their verdicts on acts from magicians to singers and dancers.

All week, acts have tried to secure their spot in Sunday’s final show as a semi-final took place every night this week. 10 acts made it through, which included singer Innocent Masuku, SSaulabi Performance Troupe, magician Jack Rhodes, dancers Haribow, singer Sydnie Christmas, musical impressionist Mike Woodhams, dancing duo Abigail and Afronitaaa, the Northants Sing Out choir, comedian Alex Mitchell and magician Trixy. There was also one more performer vying for the £250,000 prize – mystery wildcard The Trickstars.

Viewers have also been treated to a performance from the cast of Mamma Mia! The Musical, with the West End show currently featuring Mamma Mia! I Have A Dream winners Stevie Doc and Tobias Turley. The Britain’s Got Talent winner is crowned by hosts Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly and wins the huge cash prize and a spot at the Royal Variety Performance, which takes place on November 22nd at the iconic Royal Albert Hall.
