The dynamic duo will star in a production of Samuel Beckett’s “Waiting for Godot,” marking Reeves’ Broadway debut.

Strange things are afoot on the Great White Way.

Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure stars Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter are leaving San Dimas behind and reuniting for a Broadway revival of Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot.

Directed by Jamie Lloyd — who recently helmed the West End production of Romeo & Juliet starring Tom Holland —  the play is set to arrive on Broadway in Fall 2025 and will mark Reeves’ Broadway debut.

Forget about Bill S. Preston, Esq. and Theodore “Ted” Logan because Reeves and Winter will now star as Estragon and Vladimir, respectively. “We’re incredibly excited to be on stage together and work with the great Jamie Lloyd in one of our favorite plays,” the duo said in a joint statement.

Speaking to The New York Times, Lloyd revealed that reuniting for the project was Reeves’ idea, adding that he immediately knew that “it was a no-brainer that this needed to be done.”

He explained, “Their instant chemistry and their shorthand and their friendship is going to be so valuable. This is a very deeply complex play, as we all know, but it’s also a very funny play, and they’re very witty people and their shared sense of humor in those movies and in real life is going to be very beneficial to the production.”

Reeves and Winter initially struck up a friendship while working together on the ‘80s classic, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, and soon reunited for sequels Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, and Bill & Ted Face the Music. They also voiced animated versions of the characters in the first season of Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventures.

But don’t expect the “party on” attitude to follow the actors to the stage. Beckett’s play is more of an existentialist adventure and sees Estragon and Vladimir oscillate between hope and despair as they await the arrival of the mysterious Godot. Throughout, the duo bicker and banter over questions small and big.

The play has appeared on Broadway four times, the most recent being the 2013 production starring Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart.

While this will mark Reeves’ first time on a Broadway stage, Winter previously starred in productions of Peter Pan and The King & I as a child. Lloyd is a veteran as well, having staged several revivals, including Betrayal with Tom Hiddleston, Charlie Cox, and Zawe Ashton, A Doll’s House starring Jessica Chastain, and Sunset Boulevard starring Nicole Scherzinger.

This most excellent news comes one year after the first Bill & Ted film celebrated its 35th anniversary. During a 2023 visit to The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, Reeves didn’t hesitate when asked to name his fondest memory from filming the movie: “Friendship and acting with Alex Winter.”
