If there’s one NFL team that should feel the urgency to pull off a blockbuster trade before Week 1, it’s the Dallas Cowboys.After the Dallas Cowboys were eliminated by the Green Bay Packers in the Wild Card Round, team owner Jerry Jones stated that his team would take an “all-in” approach to the offseason.
But here we are at the end of June, and the Cowboys have yet to make a single “all-in” transaction. No blockbuster trades. No big splashes in free agency. And no contract extensions for quarterback Dak Prescott or wide receiver CeeDee Lamb.
The good new for Jones and Cowboys fans is that there is still time to pull off a big-time move between now and the Week 1 opener against the Cleveland Browns on Sept. 8.
Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport proposed a blockbuster trade idea that has Dallas acquiring Courtland Sutton and a 2026 sixth-round pick from the Denver Broncos in exchange for a conditional 2025 second-round selection and a fifth-round pick:
Sutton would fill one of those needs—an upgraded WR2 opposite star CeeDee Lamb. Given the team’s questions at running back, the Dallas offense may have to lean on quarterback Dak Prescott and the passing game more than ever. In a contract year for Prescott in which quarterback salaries continue to climb.
Lamb, Sutton, Brandin Cooks and tight end Jake Ferguson would offer Prescott an impressive array of weapons. And improved odds of keeping up with the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC East.”
The Dallas Cowboys haven’t had a quality No. 2 wideout since trading Amari Cooper to Cleveland two years ago. Brandin Cooks is better suited as a No. 3 option at this phase of his career.
Sutton is under contract for two more seasons, and the Broncos appear to be in rebuilding mode after bidding farewell to Russell Wilson, Jerry Jeudy and Justin Simmons this offseason. So if the right offer comes along for Sutton, don’t be surprised if GM George Paton parts with his best remaining trade chip on offense.
Sutton Could Help Dallas Cowboys Get Over The Hump
Dallas has recorded two straight 12-win seasons despite the lack of a true No. 2 receiver opposite Lamb. Sutton has exceeded the 50-catch and 750-yard marks four times in Denver despite lacking an elite quarterback to throw him the ball.
Put Sutton in Dallas’ high-powered offense, and he just might be the difference-maker to get them over the top in the NFC. They would certainly inch closer to challenging the San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions for the conference crown.
