The Spurs introduced Chris Paul to the media, and his press conference should clear up a few misconceived notions about why he chose San Antonio.
The San Antonio Spurs introduced two new members of the team. Chris Paul and Harrison Barnes were greeted by the media, where they answered questions about what led them to join the Silver and Black and what their expectations are. Paul was first to the podium, and what he had to say should instill confidence in the coming season from the fans.
There has been a lot of off-base talk about what the Spurs are going to be next season, most notably Brian Windhorst and Tim Bontemps of ESPN. Both analysts claimed that San Antonio is planning to tank for another season, claiming neither CP3 nor Harrison Barnes are enough to affect winning. Others have insisted that Paul’s sole purpose would be to mentor the other players, but Paul quickly put that to bed when asked if he felt an added responsibility to teach the young guys.
Chris Paul is coming to win games for the Spurs
Fans who are hesitant about this signing due to the perceived personality of Paul can rest easy. He said on multiple occasions that he is excited about helping the young players learn, but he also made it clear that he wants to play basketball. He’s here to hoop, and he’s here to win. CP3 expresses a closeness with Coach Popovich, claiming it didn’t take much selling at all to convince him. He’s excited to play with Wemby, and when Pop told him that he would get minutes, he was sold.
Paul is 39 years old, but he believes he still has a lot left in the tank. Sports medicine is highly evolved these days, and players continue to push the boundaries of what is possible and at what age. The Wake Forest alum has had many battles with the Spurs wearing an opponent’s jersey. He’s caused endless headaches in high-stakes playoff games and now he’ll bring that migraine-inducing style of basketball to our side. You gotta love it.
