Boston Celtics vs. Dallas Mavericks NBA Finals wasn’t a good one.

In the world of sportscasting, Mike Breen needs no introduction. The veteran commentator has been calling NBA games for ESPN since 2006 and is also a leading voice for the New York Giants of the NFL and the Knicks.

But on Monday night, he made a horrible mishap while calling the NBA Finals game 5 between the Boston Celtics and the Dallas Mavericks.

During the game’s closing stages, the camera panned to a female spectator. Breen introduced her to the viewers as Boston Celtics, Jrue Holiday’s wife, but that was far from the truth. Within a few minutes, Breen corrected himself and apologized for the wrong spotting.

Jrue Holiday’s wife, Lauren Holiday, is one of the most recognizable faces in the American sporting space. Lauren represented USWNT soccer on 133 occasions before retiring in 2015. Like her husband, she also had a trophy-laden career, winning Olympic Gold on two occasions and lifting the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2015.

She married Jrue Holiday in 2013 and the couple have a daughter named Tyler and a son named Hendrix. Breen’s mishap spread through social media like wildfire and fans were quick to give stick to the NBA Finals commentator.

Social Media Reacts to Boston Celtics Mixup

In the age of social media, no blooper remains unseen for long, let alone one from the NBA Finals stage. After Breen’s unfortunate call, the video of the specific section of the game went viral. While Holiday was leading his team towards the first championship in 16 years, netizens latched onto Awful Announcing’s post on X (fka Twitter). Here are some of the comments:

“His wife is literally one of the best players to play for the USWNT. Shame on him,” wrote an offended fan.

Another added, “My god this espn crew has made a bad series unforgettable for how bad every aspect of the production was aswell.”

“and then made the same mistake 5 minutes later with Jayson Tatum’s “father”..” highlighted a social media user.

“lol that is not Lauren Holdiay,” commented one.

Finding the humor in it a fan wrote, “Breen was off his game tonight. Jrue wife was captain of team USA.”

Though for Jrue Holiday everything turned out fine as he lifted his second NBA championship at the end of the night, making him the first player in the league to win the Larry O’Brien trophy with two different teams (Bucks and Celtics) in his first season.
