Should Browns’ Myles Garrett Have Won MVP? Interesting Stat Makes Case – Cleveland Tracker
JUNE 29 – MOST VALUABLE—While the NFL’s Most Valuable Player Award has become a quarterback-dominated award. One stat suggests that Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett should have won it this past season.
Obviously, this past year, the Browns’ rival, Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson, won the award. However, according to Pro Football Reference’s approximate value stat, it should have been Garrett.
As shown in the 19-player list tweeted out by Dov Kleiman, Garrett finished the season with the most approximate value, while Jackson was No. 3, with Dallas Cowboys receiver CeeDee Lamb also finishing ahead of him at No. 2.
However, as Pro Football Reference says in its glossary when explaining what “AV” is, it is not the “be-all-end-all.” Rather, as it sounds, it is simply a stat that tries to put a number on just how valuable a certain player is.
“Created by PFR founder Doug Drinen, the Approximate Value (AV) method is an attempt to put a single number on the seasonal value of a player at any position from any year (since 1960),” Pro Football Reference writes.
However, even with this stat, it obviously wasn’t taken into account when deciding who the NFL’s MVP award. Yet, it still shouldn’t take away from the season that Garrett had, as he totaled 42 tackles, 17 for a loss, 30 quarterback hits, and 14 sacks.
After not participating in either OTAs or mandatory minicamp for the Browns as he was still rehabbing from his two surgeries, which saw his meniscus, MCL, and ACL, he is in the gym doing work on his own.
As shown in a video released to Twitter Thursday, Chubb was back in his hometown of Cedartown, Georgia, where he was working out.
JUNE 27 – DANGER-RUSS— While players are certainly taking the time to enjoy the last few weeks of the offseason, they are still keeping in shape with training camp on the horizon. However, staying in shape doesn’t always mean working out on the football field.
For Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson, there are other ways to put the work in, like boxing. As the soon-to-be 13-year veteran revealed on Twitter, he has been spending time in the boxing ring.
JUNE 26 – NO SUPPLEMENTAL DRAFT – The NFL informed teams on Wednesday that there will once again be no supplemental draft for the league in 2024.
No player has been selected in a supplemental draft since 2019.
There was no supplemental draft in 2020, 2021 or 2022, but two players were available last season. Neither was selected by any team.
The supplemental draft pertains to players who were not eligible for the NFL Draft in April, but whose status has changed since.
When it’s applied, it goes seven rounds and teams that use picks then forfeit that same pick in the following season’s common draft.
JUNE 25 – FIELDS CONCERN—Even after being traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason, quarterback Justin Fields has continued to be in the spotlight. As he self-admittingly tries to compete with the one-time Super Bowl winner Russell Wilson to become the Steelers’ starter, his performance through OTAs and mandatory minicamp has left a lot to be desired.
During his recent piece revealing “winners” and “losers” from the Cleveland Browns’ rival Steelers’ offseason program, The Athletic’s Mark Kaboly had the former first-round quarterback as a “loser.”
“[Fields] talent speaks for itself. But unlike Wilson, he has a lot of obstacles to overcome for an opportunity this year. Fields didn’t get many first-team reps, and that’s significant come training camp, …” Kaboly writes. “The arm strength, speed and playmaking with his legs are undeniable. However, he showed inconsistent accuracy and relied on his feet too quickly after the first read. That stuff can be fixed, but maybe not throughout a training camp.”
The revelation may not come as a surprise to Cleveland Browns fans, as Fields’ time with the Chicago Bears may be described at best as “inconsistent.” However, unless something changes by the end of training camp then Browns can expect to see Wilson as the Steelers’ starting quarterback.
Browns Coach Stefanski Earns Praise for Which Offseason Move?
JUNE 25 – PARIS – While the Summer Olympics aren’t set to kick off for another month, the Cleveland Browns had several players in Paris, France, taking part in this year’s “Fashion Week.”
The Browns released photos of players who participated, including star cornerback Denzel Ward and recently acquired receiver Jerry Jeudy.
JUNE 24 – HIGGINS’ MOM? – The Pittsburgh Steelers rival Cincinnati Bengals finally got a signature on the franchise tender for wideout Tee Higgins, meaning the fifth-year standout will earn $21.8 million of guaranteed money in 2024.
Higgins’ mom decided to chime in on the negotiations as she posted her confidence in a long-term deal on X. “My son deserves it and it’s coming,” she wrote on X. “Gods timing, sirs. Gods timing.”
Higgins and the Bengals have been in contract negotiations but have yet to come to terms on a long-term deal. After the signing of the franchise tag, the two sides have until July 15 to agree on a contract or Higgins will have to play under the tag.

JUNE 24 – TRADE SOON? – Since their decision to trade away Diontae Johnson, it seems the Pittsburgh Steelers have been a constant potential destination for any star receiver who could be looking for a new home.
That is no different for current San Francisco 49ers star Brandon Aiyuk, who, despite leading his team in receiving yards this past season, has yet to agree on a contract extension as he heads into the final year of his rookie deal. This has prompted much speculation about a trade, with the Cleveland Browns rival, the Steelers, being mentioned.
However, as training camp is a month away for both the Steelers and Niners, Doug Whaley, a former NFL front office executive, is urging Pittsburgh to make a potential trade for Aiyuk sooner rather than later.
“Before the start of the season is a better chance than before the start of camp,” Whaley said. “Now, let’s put on your John Lynch hat. Why would you trade him now? Wait until camp starts. There’s going to be injuries. And guess what? Price just went up. So, that’s why from a Steeler standpoint, if you want him, you better get him now, cause you’re going to have to pay a lot more later.”

JUNE 23 – BROWNS COACH FIRST PITCH – As has become common this offseason, there has been a crossover between the Cleveland Browns and the Cleveland Guardians. Thanks to the ceremonial first pitch, several members of the Browns’ roster have thrown out the pitch before the Guardians’ game.
However, now Browns’ assistant receiver coach Callie Brownson became the latest to throw out a first pitch.
JUNE 23 – BUYERS REMORSE – Do the Pittsburgh Steelers have buyer’s remorse when it comes to their free-agent signing of Russell Wilson? It’s quite the question, but one that ESPN’s Mike Greenberg believes is a hard truth of the Steelers’ offseason.
In a recent edition of ESPN’s “Get Up,” Greenberg explained why he believes the Steelers regret their signing of Wilson.
“I believe that if you gave the Steelers truth serum, they’ll never admit this nor should they,” Greenberg said. “But if they had known at the time that they were going to be able to get Justin Fields for the price that they got him for, I don’t think they would have signed Russell in the first place.”
Rewinding the clocks back to March, when the Steelers signed Wilson in free agency, there were still reports that the Chicago Bears were seeking a Day 2 in a trade for Justin Fields. That was in spite of what seemed like the sure thing of them drafting Caleb Williams No. 1 in the then-upcoming NFL Draft.
Greenberg’s potentially bold claim that the Steelers’ actual “plan A” was Fields and not Wilson is based on this.
“I think that was at a moment in time when the asking price on Justin Fields was this and the Steelers decided, ‘We’re not meeting that price,'” Greenberg said of the Steelers’ signing of Wilson. “If they had known that it would eventually get to be this, I think they would have [traded for Fields] and they would have given him every chance to be their starter.”
JUNE 22 – NEW JOB— The Cleveland Browns are enjoying their final weeks of rest before starting training camp on July 24. They’ve beefed up their support staff. The Browns announced via social media Friday that they’ve hired Dr. Dustin Nabhan as their Head of Athlete Health and Performance.
“We are excited to welcome Dustin as our new Head of Athlete Health and Performance, where he will oversee all player health and performance initiatives for our Club,” Browns’ general manager Andrew Berry said. “Dustin brings a wealth of multidisciplinary knowledge across this space and rich experience in competitive athletics from his 12 years working with the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee.”
JUNE 22 – ‘EXPLOSIVE’— The Cleveland Browns broke for their last few weeks of rest before training camp officially begins with their first practice on July 24. However, before that, veteran Elijah Moore gave a brief preview of their offense.
“I just feel like it’s going to be a lot more explosive,” Moore said of the offense via ESPN.
Certainly, it is an exciting prospect for the Browns, considering their new offensive coordinator, Ken Dorsey, who presided over an explosive Buffalo Bills offense for two seasons.
However, for the Browns’ offense to live up to those expectations, they will not only need to sign star receiver Amari Cooper to a contract extension but will need quarterback Deshaun Watson to remain healthy and rediscover the level of play he exhibited with the Houston Texans.
JUNE 20 – CUT – The Cleveland Browns announced Thursday evening that they’ve released Lonnie Phelps.
The roster move comes after the second-year undrafted free agent was arrested late Wednesday night after allegedly crashing his SUV into a restaurant in Key West, Florida.
Despite being signed by the Browns last offseason as an undrafted free agent, he never appeared in a regular-season game before his release.
JUNE 20 – HOPKINS OPENS MADDEN 25 TRAILER – Cleveland Browns kicker Dustin Hopkins has the rare honor of being the first player seen in the opening of the new EA Sports Madden 25 trailer.
Hopkins can be seen kicking off to the rival Pittsburgh Steelers as the new trailer begins before it progresses to show off gameplay features and many other players in the league.
Interestingly, the Steelers player receiving the kickoff for Pittsburgh? Steelers quarterback Justin Fields, who then reverses the play and hands off to kick returner Cordarrelle Patterson.
The preview then shows other plays and players throughout the league.
The game is slated for official release on August 16.
JUNE 20 – HARSH? – Following a TikTok video of Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Justin Fields working out with social media star James Everett, also known as the “Route God,” Le’Veon Bell did not hold back his criticism of the former first-round pick.
“That ball [is] is getting there late,” Bell wrote on Twitter. “I know it’s routes on air, but this is telling a lot.”
Bell claims that the video shows Fields being late to release the ball, especially when Everrette is running a corner route and seemingly catches the football out of bounds. This raises the question of whether it should give Cleveland Browns fans reason to salivate at the prospect of the Steelers’ starting Fields.
As of right now, it may be best to hold off. Yes, seeing a quarterback, especially one in the NFL, appearing to be late with his decision-making while throwing to a receiver versus air is worrying. But there are other factors that could explain this.
The biggest one is the unfamiliarity between the two could explain why the former Chicago Bears quarterback wasn’t throwing as early as he would be in a game.
However, nevertheless, as the Steelers are set to begin training camp near the end of July, the 25-year-old Fields will be hoping to beat out the veteran Russell Wilson as their starting quarterback.
Browns Chubb Set to Benefit from Comeback Player of the Year Change?
JUNE 18 – COMEBACK PLAYER OF THE YEAR – This coming season’s NFL Honors will see the criteria for the Associated Press’s NFL Comeback Player of the Year award change. Instead of allowing players who have bounced back from bad seasons, like the former Cleveland Browns and now-turned Indianapolis Colts quarterback Joe Flacco, to win the award, voters will focus on those who have overcome an injury, illness, or another off-the-field event.
“The spirit of the AP Comeback Player of the Year award is to honor a player who has demonstrated resilience in the face of adversity by overcoming illness, physical injury, or other circumstances that led him to miss playing time the previous season,” AP senior NFL writer Rob Maaddi said.
However, despite the optics, Ari Meirov clarified that Flacco wasn’t what prompted the change. Rather, the change was in the works dating back to 2022, when Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith won the award over the likes of Saquon Barkley and Christian McCaffrey, both of whom were coming off injuries.
JUNE 18 – WATSON RETURN? – Where is Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson in his rehab process? That has been the biggest question surrounding the Browns this offseason. Now, following the conclusion of their mandatory minicamp, general manager Andrew Berry has given an update.
“First and foremost, Deshaun has really worked his tail off during the rehabilitation process over the last several months,” Berry said. “He’s really actually ahead of schedule. … So, we’re excited as he gets into training camp and gets the pads on.”
Judging from the numerous videos the Browns have released to social media of Watson throwing this offseason, it may not exactly be a surprise that he is “ahead of schedule.”
After Watson’s first two seasons in Cleveland, during which he played in just 12 games, the Browns are hoping he can not only stay healthy but also play at levels he exhibited with the Houston Texans.
JUNE 17 – BENGALS SIGN HIGGINS – The Cincinnati Bengals signed wideout Tee Higgins to a new, one-year deal on Monday, nullifying the franchise tag he signed earlier this offseason.
“I’m excited to move forward with Tee,” said Bengals head coach Zac Taylor. “He’s done a great job handling his situation, and we are happy to get him back in the fold so we can start working toward a great 2024 season. The locker room will be excited to have him back around.”
JUNE 17 – Browns UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT – Some of the NFL’s most devoted fans will get an even closer look at the Cleveland Browns this season.
On Monday, the Browns announced that they’d be on the 2024 in-season version of “Hard Knocks,” with a twist.
This season, the show will feature the AFC North, the first time it has taken on an entire division.
“Hard Knocks” has long been the premier behind-the-scenes look at NFL action, with HBO giving fans unique access to an otherwise quiet period on the football calendar. With this edition, the show will now have three different iterations for 2024.
The New York Giants will be featured in the offseason edition, focusing on the NFL Draft and the chaos of free agency. The Chicago Bears will get the traditional training camp experience. The Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers, Baltimore Ravens, and Cincinnati Bengals will now share the spotlight during the regular season. “Hard Knocks” will continue into the postseason, too.
Cleveland was last on “Hard Knocks” in 2018.
The first episode will debut on Tuesday, Dec. 3 at 9 p.m. (ET) on HBO and can be streamed on Max.
JUNE 16 – INTERCEPTION – One of the Cleveland Browns free agent additions this offseason made his presence known during their three-day mandatory minicamp. As shown in a video released to the Browns’ official social media account, inside linebacker Jordan Hicks intercepted a pass from backup quarterback Jameis Winston.
Hicks, the nine-year NFL veteran, signed with the Browns this offseason on a two-year deal worth $8 million. The 31-year-old has spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles, Arizona Cardinals, and Minnesota Vikings over the span of his career and now joins a Browns defense that is expected to be among the league’s best.
Last season, while playing in 13 games for the Vikings, Hicks totaled 107 tackles, four for a loss, one sack, with one interception and a forced fumble.
Browns Watson Back to ‘Normal?’ Stefanski Evaluates Minicamp Performance
JUNE 15 – HOLDOUT OVER – After holding out of the three-day mandatory minicamp, Cincinnati Bengals star receiver Tee Higgins has finally signed his franchise tender, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
However, as Schefter later added, even with Higgins deciding to end his holdout and report for training camp near the end of July, it is still a “longshot” that he agrees to a new long-term deal.
So, the former Clemson product will be forced to play this coming season, likely his last in Cincinnati, on an expiring contract before having the chance to enter free agency.
JUNE 14 – HOT MIC – The Cleveland Browns got just a taste of football season this past week as they completed their three-day mandatory minicamp. It was one of the first times this offseason that the team, rookies and veterans alike, got to take the field together.
Quarterback Deshaun Watson was among those veterans to take the field, and as he did so Tuesday for the first day of minicamp, the Browns mic’d him up.
JUNE 14 – FINAL STEP COMPLETE — The final ramp-up to training camp is now in the rearview. When the Cleveland Browns left the practice field Thursday, they concluded their three-day mandatory minicamp. So what’s next?
Well, the Browns will have a few weeks off in the immediate time before beginning training camp near the end of July. Just like last year, the Browns will hold training camp in Greenbrier, where they are also set to host joint practices with the Minnesota Vikings.
JUNE 13 – BRINKS TRUCK – In what feels like a certainty, with each offseason comes another market-setting quarterback deal. With the latest example this offseason being the Jacksonville Jaguars, who agreed to a five-year $275 million deal with Trevor Lawrence.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the former No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft will now be the league’s highest-paid signal-caller, earning $55 million per year. The quarterback market continues to rise in the two years following Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson’s historic contract.
Watson’s five-year, $230 million deal with the Browns, which pays him $46 million annually, now ranks eighth highest at the position.
JUNE 13 – REVIVED— After a tumultuous two years with the Denver Broncos, during which Russell Wilson was famously benched for the final two games of last season before eventually being released this offseason, he has a new lease on life with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
As he described his mental state when speaking with the media during the Steelers’ mandatory minicamp, he feels like he has found the “fountain of youth.”
“I feel revived in every way, mentally, emotionally, spiritually. I feel confident. I think at some point you have to know who you are as a player, as a man, as a competitor,” Wilson said. “As somebody who’s been fortunate to be able to play this game, I don’t doubt it. I trust it. I felt really good last year playing. I felt really confident in the midst of everything. And so I think right now I have all that confidence times 10.”
By all indications, Wilson’s start in Pittsburgh has been good. There are no rumors of a strained relationship between the 35-year-old and his coaches. It is certainly something that Steelers fans want to hear, but the same cannot be said for Cleveland Browns fans.
Obviously, within a very competitive AFC North division, the Browns and Steelers not only find themselves as rivals but potentially also as direct competition for a spot in the postseason.
This means that if Wilson emerges as the Steelers’ starting quarterback and looks “revived” in terms of his performance, it could make the Browns’ quest back to the postseason all the more difficult.
JUNE 12 – TITANS SIGN BROWNS EX— The Tennessee Titans have a former member of the Cleveland Browns Wednesday with the signing of veteran offensive tackle Geron Christian.
The sixth-year offensive tackle, formerly out of Louisville, signed with the Browns last October, originally joining as a member of the practice squad.
However, following an injury crisis up front that saw the Browns without both starting offensive tackles, Jedrick Willis and Jack Conklin, Christian was asked to start in nine of his 10 appearances last season.
With most teams now two days into their three-day mandatory minicamps, focus around the league is starting to turn to training camp. This means that some teams will be looking to fill out their roster with players who can either fill holes and compete for a spot on the 53 or simply be “camp bodies.”
It is too early to tell what Christian will be like for the Titans, but nonetheless, he will have his chance to prove his worth.
JUNE 12 – HOLD OUT PUNISHMENT – The biggest news of Day 1 of mandatory minicamp for the Cleveland Browns was the absence of star receiver Amari Cooper. The former first-round pick, whom the Browns traded a fifth and sixth-round pick to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for, is now holding out.
As reported by Mary Kay Cabot, Cooper is not present for the Browns’ second day of minicamp, putting to bed any doubt about whether this is a contract holdout.
As for the potential punishment, unlike OTAs, which were voluntary, Cooper could now be subject to a $101,716 fine if he misses all three days of minicamp, in accordance with the league’s collective bargaining agreement.
JUNE 11 – MADDEN— It is that time of year: the NFL season is just around the corner, and training camp is weeks away. This also means the hype is beginning to build for the newest installment of Electronic Arts’ Madden video game.
While EA isn’t set to release “Madden 25” until August 11, that hasn’t stopped them from getting the hype train going, starting with Tuesday’s reveal of the cover athlete. No, it wasn’t a member of the Cleveland Browns. Rather, they opted for San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey.
The reigning Offensive Player of the Year and rushing leader from last season has now made history, becoming just the fifth running back to grace the cover of a Madden game, joining the likes of Peyton Hillis, Adrian Peterson, Berry Sanders, Eddie George, Shaun Alexander.
JUNE 11 – HOLDOUT – As teams kick off mandatory minicamp around the league Tuesday, there is certain to be plenty of news about who is and isn’t present for the three-day camp. Luckily for the Cleveland Browns there aren’t expected to be any players holding out for a new contract. However, the same cannot be said for their AFC North rival, the Cincinnati Bengals.
While Ja’Marr Chase, who missed OTAs as he awaits a long-term deal, did return for minicamp, his fellow receiver Tee Higgins did not, according to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport.
After being franchise-tagged by the Bengals this offseason, Higgins has still yet to sign his tender, which means technically he is not under contract and thus won’t be subject to fines for missing minicamp.
JUNE 11 – CYBERTRUCK— Elon Musk’s Tesla has been among the leading automakers in the electric vehicle industry. After the big success of its sedan and SUV models, Tesla has naturally transitioned into making its own version of a “truck” with the Cybertruck.
One Cleveland Browns fan recently proudly showcased his Cybertruck, but it wasn’t just another Tesla. The Reddit user “dprunner811” touched up the appearance of his car by using the iconic brown and orange color scheme seen in the Browns uniforms.
JUNE 10 – UFL WORKOUT—The Cleveland Browns are a day away from kicking off their three-day mandatory minicamp. However, they are still looking to make roster additions.
According to a report from KPRC 2’s Aaron Wilson, the Browns are hosting Michigan Panthers offensive lineman Chimemela Okorafor for a workout. The Benedictine College product signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent last year before playing for the Panthers this past spring.
JUNE 10 – JEUDY—With the Cleveland Browns just a day away from kicking off mandatory minicamp on Tuesday, they spent Monday going through media days. This allowed the Browns’ social media team to give fans their first looks at some of the newcomers in the brown and orange.
One of the offseason additions showcased Monday was receiver Jerry Jeudy, who posed for one of his first photos in a Browns uniform.
Jeudy, the former first-round pick out of Alabama, was traded away by the Denver Broncos this offseason in exchange for a 2024 fifth and sixth-round pick.
After failing to live up to the high expectations of being a first-round pick in Denver, the 25-year-old will look to form a dangerous duo at receiver with another former Crimson Tide player, Amari Cooper.
JUNE 10 TOMLIN SIGNS The Cleveland Browns have secured the future of their leadership after announcing recently that they extended the contracts of coach Kevin Stefanski and general manager Andrew Berry. The extension for Stefanski specifically seemingly put to bed any whispers of the fifth-year coach potentially being on the hot seat this coming season if they can’t make the playoffs.
Meanwhile, elsewhere in the AFC North, the Baltimore Ravens have coach John Harbaugh locked down through 2025, and the Cincinnati Bengals’ Zac Taylor is tied down through 2026.
This left the Pittsburgh Steelers Mike Tomlin with the only expiring deal in the division. … until now.
On Monday, Pittsburgh announced it has signed Tomlin, 52, to a three-year extension.
So he is set to enter his 17th season as the Steelers’ coach … and there is coaching stability now across the divisional landscape.
JUNE 10 – VRABEL’S ROLE – The Cleveland Browns made potentially one of the sneakiest additions to their coaching staff this offseason. No I am not talking about the hiring of offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey.
Rather, it is the hiring of former Tennessee Titans coach Mike Vrabel, who, after his firing last season, joined the Browns staff as a consultant.
No, it isn’t an on-the-field coaching role that could produce the biggest impact for the Browns, but Vrabel is still a valuable addition nonetheless. So what exactly will his role entail, then?
Well, as explained in his recent appearance on the Rich Eisen Show, Browns coach Kevin Stefanski explained Vrabel’s involvement as whatever the 48-year-old wants it to be.
“He’ll be here, I told [Vrabel] we’ll take as much as you want to give us, you want to give us one hour a week or 100, that’s your call,” Stefanski said. “So we’re working through it because I’m mindful of stealing him away from his family as well, but he’ll be up here this fall, yes.”
JUNE 9 UNHAPPY? ALREADY? The Pittsburgh Steelers’ wide receivers situation threatens to be a one-man show featuring George Pickens. … and with that possibility comes The Athletic’s prediction of George Pickens unhappiness.
“Right now, there’s just a glaring hole at wide receiver after Pickens,” The Athletic’s Mark Kaboly said recently on 93.7 The Fan, going on to suggest, “Hmm, George Pickens is not gonna be happy with the coverage he’s gonna be getting.”
What’s the solution? The reporter mentioned how that changes if the Steelers “get a guy like (Brandon) Aiyuk or (Deebo) Samuel.”
It’s true that at the wideout position, the Steelers aren’t going to get it done at the same level as, say, the Browns wideouts. But “unhappiness” all teetering on whether the Steelers can engineer a blockbuster trade? That sounds pretty wobbly from here.

Manziel, who has been very open about the behavioral struggles that ruined his chance to build on his Heisman Trophy success in college while in Cleveland, seems to have turned his life around. And we wish the happy couple well!

We might argue that PFN’s evaluation is allowing itself a rather wide swath here. Watson’s a “weakness” … but he might go to the Super Bowl?
We will say this, again, given what the Browns did to bring Watson here: PFN needs to be way, way off on the “weakness” part.
