No Chill Gil will not let the Team USA selection committee live down what he thinks is a gross mistake. He’s been passionately slamming the decision to keep two of the top WNBA rookies out of the Team USA women’s basketball roster. Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark have been proving him right so far too.

So when Dawn Staley, who is a member of the USA basketball selection committee, complimented CC’s growth between the roster announcement and the Olympics opening, some Clark fans felt validated. None more so than Gilbert Arenas. But even CC supporters told him to pull the breaks a bit.

Staley is in Paris with the presidential delegation at the Olympics opening ceremony. She enjoyed the opening games while she was there but part of her attention is back home on Clak’s phenomenal rise.

The South Carolina head coach would go on to say, “If we had to do it all over again, the way that she’s playing, she would be in really high consideration of making the team because she is playing head and shoulders above a lot of people.

It’s part of a larger statement but this segment went viral. It reached Arenas, a relentless campaigner for Clark and Reese.

He commented under one such post with “I like when they admit when they got it wrong … #RealChamp for that statement.” He threw in a few complimentary emojis like fire and 100% for Staley for admitting that.

Arenas has argued this subject on his various shows over and over since the women’s roster was announced on June 11.

Leaving the two players who brought the most visibility to women’s basketball out of the Olympics was a huge faux pas according to him.

And while Staley and the committee are allowed to second guess like any normal human, fans took a moment to tell Arenas to calm down.

He’s in hot water since he and Paul Pierce made xenophobic comments against the South Sudan team during the pre-Olympics exhibition.

NBA legend, their former colleague and current president of the South Sudan Basketball Federation, Luol Deng, slammed both of them. Arenas and Pierce have since apologized for his words.

Fans were quick to remind Arenas that he might have admitted he was wrong, but he shouldn’t have spoken that way in the first place.

It’s extreme to compare his situation to Dawn Staley’s but others told him that Staley didn’t say they were wrong for skipping her.

No Chill Gil needs to chill on the Olympics

Right under Arenas’ comment, fans flooded demands that he apologize to South Sudan too. So many pointed out, “irony you can’t admit when your wrong tho … apologize to South Sudan.” His comments cut deeper than whatever Pierce said. But his apology, which was mostly directed to Deng and not the team he offended, felt shallow to everyone.

The apology did nothing to subdue fans’ outrage which is greater than when the WNBA rookies were subbed. One even felt let down by Arenas saying, “Man U bogus for them South Sudan comments I thought u was realer than that.”

Others also corrected him saying, “I think you missed the entire statement. She didn’t say she got it wrong.

It’s a if- then. If she had been playing better, she would have been considered.” Which is accurate.

The prelude to the trending statement was Staley saying, “[Caitlin Clark] wasn’t playing bad, but wasn’t playing like she’s playing now.”

Staley’s comments fans describe as, “did she though? She NEVER said she would have made the team. Dawn gave y’all a politically correct answer to stroke y’all egos”

CC had not played enough minutes into the Olympics selection process back then, which fans get.

Even the most ardent Clark fans feel putting her on the team after limited playtime would put a target on her back.

the outcry isn’t because she’s better it’s because folks are just miserable and wanted her on the team just to troll,” as one said.

Fans think that Arenas has not learned from his recent debacle to have this response to Staley. It’s looking, “s***t South Sudan -2 this morning? Easy money.” Yes his brand is, ‘No Chill Gil,’ but fans think he needs to mellow out before commenting on CC or anyone.
