Iconic American boxer Butterbean’s theory about Jake Paul was proven wrong after the Problem Child agreed to fight ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson earlier this year

Butterbean’s theory about Jake Paul has been shattered

Jake Paul has proven plenty of people wrong over the past few years, including legendary American boxer Butterbean.

Last year, the 57-year-old former World Super Heavyweight champion, whose real name is Eric Esch, admitted he’d love to face Paul at some point. However, he claimed the Problem Child, 27, wouldn’t want to take the fight because he’s “too smart” to step in the ring with someone with as hard a punch as he has.

“I would love to fight Jake Paul but he’s too smart to fight me,” Butterbean told Chris Van Vliet on his podcast back in August. “I’m not saying he’s a coward or anything like that but I would destroy him. I hit way too hard for him.

“I heard him say, ‘I’m not like Butterbean, I’m not a joke’. Ever since then, I’ve wanted to fight him,” he said, before adding: “He’s smart [because he’s making lots of money], but what bugs me is he’s fighting ex-MMA guys.”

Butterbean’s assertion was shattered a few months later when Paul sealed a deal to fight Mike Tyson, who, in his pomp, had one of the most devastating punches in the history of the sport. The pair were initially scheduled to meet on July 20 at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, but the bout has now been pushed back to November 15.

The fight was postponed on the advice of Tyson’s doctors following news the former heavyweight champion was suffering from a significant ulcer problem.

Tyson, who turns 58 later this month, hasn’t fought since his exhibition bout with Roy Jones Jr. in 2020, and his last professional fight was as far back as 2005. That said, the Baddest Man on the Planet still packs one heck of a punch if his training videos are anything to go by.

Paul, meanwhile, has nine wins from 10 professional fights and has fought three times in the last 12 months. His only defeat came against Tyson Fury’s brother Tommy in February last year, though he’s since racked up victories against UFC icon Nate Diaz, Andre August and Ryan Bourland.

Butterbean, who has a history in boxing, MMA and WWE, notched a whopping 77 wins from 91 fights over the course of his iconic career, 58 of which were knockouts. He hasn’t boxed professionally since 2013, and his last win came back in 2007.
