The United States have claimed gold in the men’s basketball tournament at the Paris Olympics, with Steph Curry delivering an all-time great display in the final.
Lebron James celebrated with his American teammates after the win
Team USA has emerged victorious in the men’s basketball tournament at the Paris Olympics, clinching gold after defeating France 98-87 on Saturday. The favorites dictated the tempo of the match and strategically sealed their win through an impressive late-game offensive performance by Steph Curry. The star player sunk three 3-pointers during the crucial endgame.
Saturday marks an especially significant moment in Curry’s already illustrious career. With this Olympic medal, he completes his range of awards at age 36. He’s previously earned four NBA championship titles with the Golden State Warriors.
Reflecting on the victory, Curry expressed to NBC: “That was an unbelievable moment. I’ve been blessed to play basketball at a high level for a very long time. I don’t know. This ranks very, very high in terms of the excitement and the sense of relief getting to the finish line.”
Surrounding Curry were other indispensable team members. At 39 years old, LeBron James secured his third Olympic gold medal and Kevin Durant, aged 35, added a fourth to his collection.
Team USA demonstrated unrivaled prowess throughout the Olympics, overcoming Serbia, South Sudan, and Puerto Rico convincingly during the group stage. Lead by Steve Kerr, the team further excelled in the quarterfinals against Brazil with a commanding 122-87 victory before experiencing their most challenging game against Serbia.
Despite Team USA’s initial victory over Serbia with a score of 110-84 in the group stage, their semifinal match proved to be a tougher challenge. The Americans had to overcome a 13-point deficit in the fourth quarter to secure a 95-91 win, setting up a gold medal showdown with France.
Team USA has now amassed a total of 17 Olympic gold medals, including five consecutive championships. The American team has never left the Olympics without a medal, earning silver in 1972, bronze in 1988, and another bronze in 2004.
Like Curry, Anthony Edwards, Derrick White, Tyrese Haliburton, and Joel Embiid are celebrating their first Olympic golds. Meanwhile, Jayson Tatum, Jrue Holiday, Bam Adebayo, and Devin Brooker have added another gold medal to their collection, following their win in Tokyo three years prior.
However, this Olympics will be particularly remembered for the performances of Curry, James, and Durant – who are widely considered as the best players of their generation. Looking ahead, one player who is expected to make waves in the NBA for many years to come is Victor Wembanyama.
The 20 year old Frenchman put on an impressive show for his country on Saturday, outscoring Curry with 26 points. Despite missing out on the gold medal, an emotional Wembanyama will have the chance to take on the United States on home soil when the Olympics are held in Los Angeles in four years’ time.
After all, it seems that retaining their Olympic title is becoming increasingly challenging for the Americans.
